  1. Problem is you can no longer find the cheap land to plant.
  2. Heat the polytunnel with the sawdust burner
  3. As already outlined I am well underway with a solar variation which looks like it will cost less than the 10k budget I allowed and is projected to receive approx 4k RHI per annum. If we require higher throughput then we will increase the number of solar panels which would also increase the RHI payment.
  4. So you ignore the 18500 euro price for the standard container system and quote the top of the range 36000 euro price for the all singing all dancing lumber kiln capable of drying planking timber without splitting. Even that is a lot less than the 65k + vat quoted earlier.
  5. Well that finally takes the biscuit. If anyone wants one just look on the internet there readily available on alibaba manufactured in Lithuania and come under the name of Fly 40 just add your own RHI compliant boiler and meter. http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lumber-drying-chamber-container-type-FLY40_126507756.html
  6. IBC's normally around £15 each around here for frames only or £30 including plastic bottle.
  7. My waste wood is what everyone on arbtalk knows as arb waste which is converted into logs. The only waste wood I get is sawdust from the saw blade which I was led to believe your boiler will not burn.
  8. Could you confirm what make of boiler this is as speaking to DECC only this week their unaware of any boiler which meets the current legislation because there waiting for the legislation to be redrafted.
  9. I did get real and read the small print the kiln burns logs the sort of product you can sell for £100/m3 not the useless carp of bark, chips or sawdust which you quote above.
  10. Just wondered if anyone would be interested in a woodland syndicate. With wood getting scarce it makes sense to have your own supply but economies of scale dictate purchase of hundreds of acres rather than small woodlots. In the renewable sector it is quite common for crowd funding to get projects off the ground just wondered whether the same technique could be applied to woodland. Must be a lot of pitfalls otherwise everybody would be doing it.
  11. If anyone hears of a C200 Holder or similar for sale I am in the market for one. At the moment all I can find are in Europe for silly money.
  12. My MF550 is really only a MF135 with cab and it easily picks up my Palax processor with saw blade and conveyor.
  13. My dad died age 50. When we got the coroners report his lungs were clogged as though he smoked 100 cigs a day although he never smoked in his life. Analysis revealed the particles were lignum vitae sawdust which he processed on a daily basis manufacturing ship propellor bearings. Needless to say I always wear a proper mask, engineers glasses and ear protectors.
  14. Does anyone know whether you need planning permission for a permanent skyline. Have a hillside which could be used as timber access route in summer and ski lift in winter.
  15. Think of a figure which you feel is a reasonable return then divide by 2 and you have CPL rates. I dont know who supplies them but they must be pretty desperate to work for pennies.
  16. Thats the whole point people have made kilns for that sort of money the only new part to the equation is RHI which to comply you need specific ofgem approved meters which cost less than a grand and an approved heat source. Fortunately my solar heat source is approved however I believe no biomass source has been approved yet as DECC has screwed up the legislation with regard to biomass emissions for RHI.
  17. Why do you need 50k just because somebody says there system costs 50K does not mean it would actually cost you 50k. I think people are being very blinkered. Just look on the US sites where container kiln drying originated you can get kits for 5000 US$ to convert standard shipping containers. The shipping container you can quite easily pick up for a grand and a boiler for another £1500. The only RHI expense is the flow and return meters specified by ofgem and there less than a grand so all in total cost would be approx 5k.
  18. Also be aware of the record keeping that you will need for RHI supply even if it is your own timber. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/ofgem-publications/82674/guidetokeepingfuelrecordsforbiomass.pdf
  19. Boilers like the REFO can easily handle woodchip. If you cannot afford a heizohack chipper to produce G30 or G50 spec then a rotary screen will effectively do the same but you will have to dispose of the reject material. Hardest problem is drying the green waste so that it can be stored. The easiest way I have found is to put the screened chip into chicken wire lined IBC containers and store in my polytunnels. After a month I tip out into another container using a pallet rotator to break up the lumps and allow it to dry. If I had a rotary screen I would use that. Its then ready for use with a moisture content normally below 25% and I think the Refo handles upto 30%
  20. If its not split and ready for delivery by the end of October then it has to wait until the end of March to start processing for the following year as I am to busy delivering timber. Solar drying therefore makes sense especially when you can claim the RHI throughout the summer.
  21. So can I but I would not do it every day If I want to avoid a wooden box.
  22. Sorry but all my waste wood I sell for £100 m3. As for 14 tons in under 3 days what is the point in that if your only splitting 7 tonne in 3 days. I worked out a steady manageable production of an IBC container (1.2 m3) per hour therefore 40 IBC containers per week which will fit into one shipping container to give a weekly batch cycle. Simples.
  23. Seems a bit silly burning wood when you can still get the RHI on a solar kiln. Especially with wood supplies becoming scarce.
  24. Lost a 25mtr polytunnel overnight. Split right down a seam will try and do a temporary repair but it will have to be a new sheet when the weather gets warmer.
  25. I would just prune every third stem back to ground level and see how it grows back. If reasonable do another third next winter. If regrowth not strong by third year then lay remaining Yew. If still no use than grub out and start again. My personal experience with yew is that its very forgiving and very difficult to kill by abuse.
