  1. I am clearing around a couple of ponds lots of dead Elms but there are two 9 inch DBH trees not yet showing signs of DED. Iwas thinking of pollarding them both see if i can get a longer life for them. Has anyone on here pollarded Elm trees and did you have any success? i know they will need pollarding every 15-20 years but hey i am game:001_smile:
  2. Wonderful trees pollards. They seem to be very low i am guessing about head height. That is the first silver birch i have ever seen as a pollard grows back well:thumbup1: Someone cut that gob in went home for lunch and forgot to go back:lol: what would HSE have to say about that. Brill pictures david.
  3. I have not seen fungi on hawthorn. With Laetiporus everywhere but not seen it on the white thorn.
  4. Future tree geeks there or are they going to be mycologists:001_smile:
  5. On the other side of the coin i remember the story about a very old sycamore the owners were told to fell it as it was a hazard. They decided not to and a few months later a gale wind blew and down came trees all around the sycamore which was untouched the hollow tube theory comes to mind here:001_smile:
  6. Straight as an arrow pic 1. I like the benches:thumbup:
  7. Thanks Gimmer. How far is not far as people who know me will tell you i am a recluse and get withdrawal symptoms one mile from home:lol:
  8. Very good some wise words in there. Be yourself do not try and be like someone else:thumbup1:
  9. The trouble with me is i am getting a danger with driving looking left and right at all the trees and fungi. The wife does most now so i can tree watch:thumbup:
  10. The trouble is large land owners with lots of trees will only put x amount of money in the tree budget. If you have a good year and say spend a third next year you have a bad year and spend all your budget and need some more, can i have the money i did not spend last year NO it does not work like that:cursing:
  11. Yes:lol:
  12. They would out live us all just in retrenching. Plus by the time they retrench down to halfway a lot of them then spring into life again with new shoots. If you go to Windsor there are some nice old beech in there the stems have rotted out and opened and are now closing again a cool sight.
  13. Red maple does not look right but could be. Defo not silver wrong shape:001_smile:
  14. I talked them into planting four princeton Elms here last year. They have not looked good all year we will have to see what the spring brings for them:001_smile:
  15. I know it is an Acer i am a tree geek:lol: But i need a possitive ID. There is a small area in the park with trees that are clearly special and the person who planted them liked there trees:001_smile:
  16. It would be good on bracken but what would you use bales of bracken for?
  17. I need a bit of help with the ID of this tree.
  18. Have any of you in London seen those eco-people living at Kew bridge in polythene tents and camp fires the banner read this land belongs to all of us.
  19. That must put me at no 1 then Ian and Dean:thumbup:
  20. Dan i bet you look a tree geek in those green man T- shirts:lol:
  21. I went to take the dogs for a walk this afternoon and the trampoline got caught by the wind a went over a 6 foot deer fence into the park. My daughter and me had to leave it there as the wind was to strong to lift. So my tame deer buzzby can play on it tonight:lol:
  22. I was talking to Steve about tree huggers earlier and this set me thinking how many of us would call ourselves tree geeks who love everything about trees from saplings to to veterans from fungi to shapes and colours. Or do you see it as a job and money and that is it. I know both sorts i know a couple of lads who hate trees it is a job only. Lets see what we have on this forum i place monkeyd at no 1 followed by Sean at no 2:lol: Oh that puts me at 3 then:thumbup1:
  23. The two big ones are DBH of 6 foot plus i am going back with my tape to get the true size:thumbup:
  24. This thread seems to have died. It is a good job these old girls and boys are alive:thumbup:
  25. Yes Justin:thumbup1:
