  1. I'd like to see the Judge given a squirrel in a cage, a sack and a hammer to see if he could humanely kill the squirrel using the " Single blow to the head".
  2. I thought it was a rabbit at first glance, perhaps the head should be a bit further forward. EDIT; I just had another look, I think it's the wings being too thick that stops it being instantly recognisable to me. If they were thinner and maybe swept back a bit at the top it might give more impression of movement.
  3. If, like me, you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you can sometimes spot these damaged branches where they have lost side shoots. Squirrels often rest up in holes where the side branches have fallen off and woodpeckers have pecked out the rotten wood. So if you see a squirrel running along a branch and suddenly disappear, or you see just a tail hanging down, it's likely there is a rotten hole there somewhere.
  4. There isn't going to be a nice answer to these pests, Cannon netting; [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX-8WIg6LMI]YouTube - Cannon Netting[/ame] Followed by; Humane Bird Dispatcher - Solway Feeders
  5. I'd go for squirrel damage too. I have lost some very large branches from old trees to it. The branches look fine from the ground, but the squirrels have taken the bark from the top and allowed rot in. One day the branch just drops off.
  6. A few years ago a photocopier fell over in the back of my transit, spilled Silicone Oil on the plywood floor. Ever since then everything slides around on the floor like an egg in a new non-stick pan. This might do the trick for your tipper.
  7. If, as has been written here, the area was so remote as to take hours for armed police to arrive then the local police stations or even cars should have firearms available. I'm not suggesting pistols, they take far too much training to use effectively at anything other than very short range, but a pump action shotgun loaded with AAA buckshot. This would require much less training and practice. Such a weapon would allow a few quick shots from behind cover to disable a maniac, from a distance of 50+yds, the police could then retire to safety and wait for the experts.
  8. How do you plan to stop concrete and cement dust on the scaffolding boards from wearing out your cutting edges ?
  9. I bought some 50 gram 3" Magnums for fox, tried one the other day - my ears were ringing afterwards.
  10. There are a lot of woodies flying over, but the canopy will close soon so pigeons will be out until autumn. I'm due to cut 4 acres coppice in October, which will be great for roost shooting as they come in to the standards. I'm thinking of halo thinning around some standards on the higher ground, that might present an opportunity to loft some decoys up. I'm off all next week except Friday if you fancy an early morning squirrel / pigeon shoot.
  11. With a .17HMR you can go out a lot further than that. If you've got some land cleared for HMR I can bring it over and let you have a go, my lands got too many damned trees on it.
  12. That's a great tip
  13. I'll try to get up and have a look to see if there is a hole into the centre of the tree. Thanks for the suggestions
  14. I saw one of these in my front porch a few days ago, first time I have ever seen one in 47 years living here so I guess they must be moving habitat.
  15. I have a previously healthy old Hornbeam that has started to leak an oily black goo from a split halfway up the trunk. I'd like to find out if this is dangerous, could someone give me a possible name for the disease, or even several possibles, so that I can do a search for it ? Thanks, Steve
  16. Try for a set with lockable controls. I bought Motorolas years ago, to use in the woods for my kids, they discovered the auto-scan feature and had fun winding up the staff of a local leisure centre for a while until I caught them at it. The poor buggers were getting calls to run all over the building.
  17. Won't some of those reductions end up looking like "afro" haircuts in a year or so ? I prefer the trees to look pollarded for a while and then grow decent size branches. I'm no expert though, I just look at trees.
  18. I wish I could say they are rubbish, but I can't, they're pretty decent machines with a decent warranty service at a good price. They're putting PC repair companies, like mine, out of business.
  19. Call me stupid, but I don't get the joke. Someone fill me in, please

    Cheap chains!

It's worth mentioning that the Chinese will fake absolutely anything with no regard to your safety, and the fakes look very, very convincing. So that cheap eBay Stihl chain might not be what it seems.
  21. You think car dealers are snobs ? Try walking into a London gunshop. If they don't have three generations of your family on the books they don't serve you until the shop's empty and all the staff have had lunch.
  22. I've been told that rats absolutely love to live under decking, so it's probably worth while putting some bricks or something around the perimeter.
  23. I can only post as an enthusiastic amateur, but I bought a 346xp based on lots of advice from here and it's a great saw. The pickup is very quick, which makes it a dream for snedding and trimming, and when you need to cut something bigger it has the power. I don't like the switchgear as much as a Stihl, and it's not so easy to start as it could be, but it's light and well balanced and cuts for ages on a tank of fuel. I really like it, I can use it for hours and not get tired or pumped.
  24. How long does a Zip line have to be ? I just picked up a long length of lift cable. It would make a great Zip line I think, 20 ton+ breaking strain.
  25. What would you grow Mark ? How much space would you need ?
