  1. had the same issues with my 550 with the black filter fitted. i returned mine to dealer to have the software upgrade and mentioned this crap filter they contacted husky who told them there was no hd filter??
  2. plus 3 old danarms if anyone is interested. the vintage teles 2 man saw looks lethal! but all original boxes and stuff. i would post the link if i knew how, just search it and im sure you will find his site. No ones allowed to bid on the startomatic generator though because i want it!!
  3. stihl kombi is rubbish, but proper bit of kit to do the job. the stupid plastic bits in the end of the shafts keep coming loose then the tool rotates in the coupling then you overtighten the bolt eventually ripping the thread out of the poor quality recycled aluminum coupling head. and the 2 little bits of metal that are ment to rotate the spline so to align with head snap off, which dealer was happy enough to replace but how the heck do you get out the old snaped off bits still in the shaft head?? gear box on hedgetrimmer bearings failed after a year, and i swear there was no grease in it from new only a few pumps that i had put in periodically. plus it just sounds like a bag of bolts!

    Husky 550XP

My local dealer who sold me the saw didnt know you had to set to auto tune at all! he never reads instruction apparently. what hope is there of getting them to do a software update??! According the instructions! the warm start, still put switch into choke position then immediately push down to start throttle setting, decomp, purge 6 times. then pull, then swear that it wont bloody start again!

    Husky 550XP

mine is only 4 weeks old and is ok but just starting today i have not been able to start if after refuelling it, so trying to start it warm and it has sounded a bit rough for a couple days. i just blamed my lad for flooding it but i took the plug out and it was dry. it did the same to me later in the day. i will try to pop it black to my dealer for them to check.
  6. ive got a lewis winch and its good but havent used it much yet, it takes a bit of getting used to. I did get a capstan winch which is bad for tree work, i found it hard to keep pull constant on rope, avoid over wrapping rope and watching load, all at the same time. trashed a new polydyne lowering rope on first use!
  7. Yep, had me stumped too. With no obvious changes to the surrounding area and only a very minor road near it. The deformed epicormic did make me think weed killer poisoning, but i couldnt see how any of the neighbours would have gained anything. The grass was healthy all round the base. I did look for evidence of stem injections but couldnt see anything. I had put it down to water related stress similar to the sycamores and beech. I have never seen a moth eaten tree before. I have seen insect damage but only on isolated limbs not the whole tree and even the basal shoots have been eaten. I did prune a twig from the crown and it just looked like a winter twig. No obvious evidence of insect damage. Does the moth eat the leaf or the actual bud before flush? Once again, Thanks Tony
  8. tree is in sheltered location, approx 45m from stream, in small valley bottom, with healthy Ash within the same area.
  9. I was called to look at this tree yesterday. It looked in perfect health last year. One of my regulars. the stem looks clean. its a stone stood against the base in the photo. Any ideas?
  10. yes i agree on a self employed basis 68 is not enough. i do use another guy on a self employed basis and he gets 120 a day. but on an employed basis? he does not drive (i keep moaning to him about this) and is not particularly switched on but is very reliable. i want to be fair to the guy and pay him the going rate for an employed groundworker. like i said i have never employed anyone before. what are you guys paying employed staff?
  11. Hi all. i am new to employing staff, just wondering what the going rate is for groundworkers. i am currently paying him by the hour which is working out to 340 per week average and i have still got to pay him 5.6 weeks holiday pay.Is this too much? or am i just being tight?? i was thinking of paying him on a per week basis but im not sure about it all. My eyes just glaze over when the accountant starts talking!
  12. wow, and i thought i was the only one!
  13. its time to replace my old 440 with a 441. just thought i would see if there were any better or worse bits on the new saw. any thoughts welcome.
  14. ive just had the quad chip on demo. i was very impressed with the versatility of the machine, the ability to chip as conventional road tow with turntable or to use as tracked machine is a great plus. The chipping performance was very nearly as good as the jensen 540 i had on demo the week before. The longevity of the machine is in my mind the only question mark.
  15. just before i trade this chipper in, i was wondering if anyone would like to make me an offer. I think its worth more than the salesman is prepared to give me, and i dont really have much of an idea. Built in April 2002 569 hrs I bought the machine new from wilkie recycling, still have receipt and manuals As you an see from the photos i have given the chipper a coat of paint and a new set of stickers. I have more pics if anyone is interested both Chippers in devon I am sure all you guys know how good these machines are. Also have a tunnissen 190, 2006, with about the same hours. This is a 7" machine in perfect working order. I havent tarted this machine up at all and use it every day. Trying to trade in two machine and buy 1 new machine but i still have to find a lot of money.
  16. yep tis gutting i had a local carpet fitter quote to carpet our whole house, 440 which i thought was resonable at the time. took me all day and night to shift everything outside and make it as easy as possible hoping to make it cheaper, 2 men turned up in tracky bottoms (and both had carpeted toolboxes!) one spent a hour on the bloody phone, i made them both t on tap, they were gone by 4, they still took 440 off me. if only i could do that. that old dear sounds like a right sweet heart. Bet you recommended planting a replacement!
  17. God lover and proud of it, far far far from perfect but He just keeps on loving me. Still wouldnt have a fish on my truck though, just wouldnt be right when i scream obsenities at the old driver pottering along at 7mph without a care in the world! But the fish symbol is far far far more reliable than the Land Rover symbol:001_tongue:
  18. i priced up a lewis winch the other day £715 for the winch, another 90 odd for the long cable. And you will be needing that spare 60cc saw (at least) at the back or the shed, but not a stihl as it looks pants, it needs an attachment thing to make it work with the clutch i think. all plus vat i opted for a capstan winch from cyclone but thats not perfect either
  19. yep ive had loads off them, they give a better deal if you order lots of chains at once. even bought 2 208 litre drums of bar oil off them, nobody else i tried could get near there price.
  20. I am based in the Kingsbridge area. The job is near Dartmouth.
  21. I have got a bit behind and with a couple of big jobs (well, big for me) to do i was wondering if there was anyone who would be interested in a couple of days down in Devon? In about a week or two? pm me if interested
  22. i am loving my new spiderjack when up in the tree but finding it a pain with the initial getting off the ground, iam finding the sj is grabbing sometimes but not others on my new england 13mm rope yet when up in the tree its great, grips and easy to move. (except not all that easy to move with my left hand) How are you guys getting off the ground? do i need a new, thinner rope?
