  1. Leeds Fest just has a sort of cesspit affair going on. Quite horrible after the first day. By the last day there's usually bikes and all sorts in there.
  2. I've heard a lot of good things about them, never tried one though. I'm doing my 39 in a couple of weeks so I'll give one a try then.
  3. What are your views on them? I'm not a full time climber myself, just finished college and doing the odd-job for friends family to save up and get some kit. I've climbed in a few different harnesses and really liked the treeflex but lots of places don't seem to sell them, which has made me slightly suspicious. Are there any particular issues with them that I wouldn't have picked up on, being inexperienced, but that you folks have noticed? Any thoughts welcome, ta.
  4. The bloke selling the "Treepedo" came from Canada I think.
  5. Unfortunately, this post isn't going to help you much! I was just curious as to how you found work in NZ? Also, I'm off to The National School of Forestry in Penrith in September, and I'll be advertising the whole while so if I get anything that requires two pairs of hands, I'll be sure to give you a shout. Good luck mate.
  6. Thanks folks. I'll get on to the firm I was with for my placement and have appllied to Fountains and a few others. Trying to cast my net as far and wide as possible and get to know as many faces as I can in the industry.
  7. As the title suggests, I'm just finishing a National Diploma in Forestry and Arb. during which time I've done CS30, CS31, CS38 (CS39 in the next couple of weeks) and I also have UA1 and a full, clean driving licence. Also had to do a six month block period with a tree surgeon as part of the ND. I'm now looking for work. I live in the North East but can travel and even relocate if the salary allows. I know the jobs market isn't good at the moment with people out there with more experience and certs than me but I'm enthusastic and willing to listen/learn. Wish me luck!
  8. Some councils use a big company to do most of the work like Glendale or Bartlett's or something and they can then subcontract. Keep an eye out locally for other contractors doing jobs that look like council work, might get some clues.
  9. Collins' Pests, Diseases and Disorders of Garden Plants is pretty good. Nowhere near as in depth as Diagnosis of Ill Health... etc. but considerably cheaper. But Diagnosis of Ill Health in Trees is a fantastic book.
  10. Nothing to do with the get together as I didn't make it but any ideas from you folks on who or where I could get an apprenticeship would be welcome. I posted in this thread because of it being fairly local. I'll be finishing an ND this year and want to do the apprenticehip to start getting some experience.
  11. There seems to be a lot of literature etc. about not pruning cherries or plums in the winter because they are most at risk of being infected with Silver Leaf at this time. But I've been working for a company doing a lot of Local Authority work for the past six months (including autumn/winter) and it doesn't seem to bother them, so not sure.
  12. Looks like it's today! I hadn't realised it was so close, there were a few of us going to come over from Askham-Bryan. Not to worry, we'll make the next one. Hope a good time is had by all.
  13. Graham's still the technician. What a legend, one of the wisest blokes I know.
  14. I've just found out I'm off to Sweden for three weeks in late spring/early summer with college so if there's anything in particular you want me to look at while I'm there, let me know.
  15. Good stuff folks! That's just about problem solved/mission accomplished. Thanks to all.
  16. Tradmastarna have an English website and occasionally advertise on arbjobs. Might be worth emailing/calling them.
  17. Sorry to bore you folks but I've come to a bit of a stand still with an assignment I'm currently working on. I have to, "Explain potential legal consequnces facing the tree surveyor." Any thoughts/ideas are most welcome.
  18. If you're a member of ConFor I think they offer funding for career development.
  19. I'm at Askham Bryan and there's at least three of us who'd be well up for a regular meet.
  20. I'm studying at Askham Bryan, and would be pleased to do one day a week(ish) or weekends. Just looking for as much experience as possible at the moment so if that's not what you're looking for now but are able to consider something in future give me a shout. I've got my own PPE and have about six months experience (in second year of ND) with CS30 and 38.
  21. I'm no pro by any stretch but if I miss a few times I usually try from a different angle/for a different branch or something. Frustration sets in less quickly for me this way. Practice must be the trick I suppose though.
  22. Is the Photo in your avatar Castle Douglas, Dave. It looks amazing!
  23. Carvers love the stuff so you may be able to sell some if you have any decent lengths.
  24. What saw is that your using (appears at about 18s) it looks red?
