  1. Our lecturer would fail us on the test if we didn't write the latin names properly ie: Capital letter for the first letter of genus, lower case for the speices, eg: Quercus robur Fagus sylvatica etc. You might be lucky and have a more lenient lecturer!
  2. Quercus robur. Had to do ID tests last year at college too. I was overwhelmed at first, just too many to learn I thought but after a few weeks it starts to come naturally. I walked round campus a few times too, trying to recall the names, rather than sitting inside studying. Found that helped loads. Buds in clusters at the end of the twig is a biggy for ID, at least for me anyway.
  3. Yeah, still has his thumb, not much else. That's dedication for you.
  4. Do you do Forestry type work then or arb work?
  5. It got pulled off, sort of pulled through a big pulley type thing. He keeps it in his office. The thing that is responsible that is, not is severed hand.
  6. Bet that was quite an experience. Like a secret garden.
  7. No, you're right there, it couldn't have been fun. Hats off to the man though, he's kept it up.
  8. He makes me wish I had a hook. He's so cool.
  9. I've been watching it on History too, well worth a watch. As well as the narator playing up the danger some of the workers play up for the camera. In particular the son of the bloke with a hook for a hand.
  10. Collins Nature Guides, Trees of Britain and Europe is a nice handy size and is pretty informative. It shows plenty of introduced species too so covers a lot of things you're likely to come across doing domestic work. RRP is £8.99 but you can get them much cheaper. I was in Scarborough in the Spring and a little gift shop had some in (no idea why). They were selling them off along with rock and toffee etc, I think they were about a fiver.
  11. Have you thought of starting some kind of recreational tree climbing business? It's something I'm going to look into in time (I'm not even fully trained myself yet). There seem to be one or two places popping up (try googling) and I think there's probably a bit of money to be had doing it.
  12. I thought this was the only non porn site on the net? I'll have to start making the most of all those other sites out there.
  13. http://www.countrycovers.co.uk does some good stuff, resonably priced too (some of it). My boss has an amazing jacket I wear when he isn't with us, it was handmade, cost about £200. It's a waxed material. I can't remember where he got it but I'll find out. Apparently the gaurantee on the country-covers stuff also stands if you damage the stuff.
  14. I finish an ND in Arb in July next year and will come out with CS 30, 31, 38 and 39. Do you know if anyone out there would take on somebody with those sort of credentials or do they look for more experience?
  15. Yeah, I'm with the recommedations on this too, thoroughly enjoyed it. Occasionally found myself just staring into space thinking about the size of the trees. I've started a "Go to see The Redwoods" fund.
  16. I looking for work untill January 2009 when I go back to college to finish an ND in Forestry and Arboriculture. I'd be willing to relocate untill then. In addition to a full, clean driving license I hold the following NPTC Certificates: CS30 Level Two Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue UA1
  17. I am currently seeking full time employment untill January 2009, at which time I will be returning to college to complete my ND in Forestry and Arboriculture. I am willing to relocate temporarily and can give my assurance that I am looking to gain as much experience as possible in this time, which means working hard! In addition to a full, clean driving license I hold the following NPTC Certificates: CS30 Level 2 Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue UA1 Please either reply or email me at: [email protected] Many thanks Dan
