  1. I've heard Cattle Dogs are about the best you get as far as Guard Dogs go, fiercley protective of their family.
  2. People often advertise For Sale/Wanted this type of thing in the back of Forestry and Timber News. May be worth having a look. I think the next on is due out in February.
  3. It was a very nice thing to do, I'm sensitive about getting old. Someone said to me the other day, "Are you SERIOUSLY only 21?? Ha! You look about 30!". Needless to say they were not included in the next round at the bar.
  4. Being born in 87 makes me 21! But I still qualify for the apprenticeship at college. I think it's anyone under 24 in England.
  5. I will be completing an ND in Forestry and Arb in June of this year and will come out with CS30, 31, 38 and 39. I have been offered the chance by my college of completing and NVQ Level 2 apprenticeship in a further 9 months if I wish to do so. Although this may seem like a step backwards (ND is a level 3 qual) I would, in the 9 months gain CS 32, 40, 47, PA1, PA6, MEWP Operator and NPTC Brushwood Chipper as well as experience. It is experience in the industry which I am most keen to gain, rather than tickets, but I think this apprenticeship would be a great way to gain some more experience. I have already completed a 6 month work placement from June - December 2008. If anyone thinks they may be able to offer me such an apprenticeship or has any ideas for me, please let me know. Thanks Dan
  6. It's also easy to say, "you are not required to pay them anything." but as I explained the "Placement" only need be a few weeks long, not six months. I also have tickets and usually work as part of a two man team which could not operate without me. Just to clarify when I said I don't start again till January, I meant college, not work.
  7. The course I'm doing requires we do some industry relevant work, something like the equivelant of two weeks, full time. I've been working since June and don't start again untill January. In that respect, even if I wasn't payed at all for that period, it's still pretty dismal. Anyway, appologies for this thread hijack, I'll make this my last post!
  8. Pwhoar. I bet he had a grin on him after that.
  9. I'm currently between years of an ND (working from June 2008 and starting back at college January 2009). I have CS30 and Aerial Rescue as well as UA1. I use all of my own PPE. I'm not a numpty and work hard at work and when studying. I'm being paid £20 and always thought this was unresonable but bit my tounge because firstly I needed the hours for my course and secondly this is such a small industry I didn't want to get labelled as awkward. Should I make a stand? I obviously can't survive on this wage and have had to move back in with Maw and Paw, so I'm not starving.
  10. I remember somebody telling me that the ones planted in York centre are genetically predisposed to "falling apart". They've all been dastically reduced now and look horrible.
  11. Earplugs are fantastic if you put them in properly (give them a squeeze and warm them up first). I can remember being woken up by a policeman with them in when I was living with my mates. I had work the next day and they were having a party, which was subsequently closed down by the boys in blue because of the noise. I hadn't heard a thing.

    Allotment

The Local Authorities have just became more and more incompetent. There are a few derelict allotment sites about but phones aren't answered etc. I'm apparently number 68 on a list of more than 200 (and growing), 2 years after first enquiring. I'm thinking about going down the "Dig for Victory" route myself.

    Allotment

Looking good. Incidently Dave, allotments are now impossible to get in Newcastle!
  14. You could contact Askham Bryan in York. I'm studying there, I go back in January and there's a few lads on my course from around Leeds. I havn't met the people who started in September so there might be someone from around there.
  15. I'm no expert but I'm looking ahead in terms of career development. I complete an ND in June and come out with CS30, 31, 39 and Climb Trees and Aerial Rescue (used to be 38). To my eyes, there doesn't seem to be much point in having a seperate CS39 (Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness) and CS40 (Pruning Operations). An NPTC money spinner? I think so, if not, could anyone explain why it is necessary to have these two certs. seperate?
  16. I'm thinking of starting mine in September 2009, currently doing the ND at Askham Bryan. Myerscough is one of the places I'm applying to, what's it like there? Do you live on campus? What are the facilities like?
  17. Well done mate. I'll have an extra beer for you.
  18. I had such little experience when I did mine I was convinced I'd fail, but passed. I can only assume the assesors look for ability at the most basic level and possibly knowledge at a slightly higher level. I'm sure the old hands on here will chip in to reassure you too. Good luck all the same.
  19. Not sure if you already use them but arbjobs.com and horticjobs are both updated pretty regularly.
  20. And lucky the bush wasn't the old favourite, Rubus cockburnianus.
  21. I'm currently at Askham Bryan college in the second year of an ND. I currently have CS30 and Aerial Rescue ticket. Also UA1. I've been working at home (Newcastle) since August and don't go back to college untill January. Anybody be able to offer, or know of anyone who may be able to offer me some part time employment when I'm back there? Probably just one or two days a week plus weekends. Thanks Dan
