  1. When I'd just started climbing I was really broke and couldn't afford all the gear. I spent the first couple of months climbing on a rope using both ends coz i couldn't afford a flipline and ropegrab!! best thing i ever did - managing two ropes/rope-ends is a proper handy trick to master! I keep two ropes in my daily gear now! plus one is slightly older than the other so i don't mind using it for sappy nasty conifers!
  2. I was just wondering how people mark their saws and equipment in order to make them identifiable for security reasons? I'm building up quite a bit of gear now and I'm after ideas for keeping them secure! Your thoughts much appreciated - Cheers!
  3. Whilst working in a tree i got my top handle nipped up, got another one sent up and, whilst freeing the branch, sawed right throught the chain brake handle of the first one - Doh!! Was at tree surgeon school at the time!

    engine firing

I believe Husqvarna, as a company, have greater control now over the manufacturing of their saws and the revenue generated by their sale. I.E. ploughing revenue back into R & D, rectifying problems etc. Rather than profits being bypassed and going straight to Electrolux. However I'm not sure whether Husqvarna are still actually owned by Electrolux or Not. Incidenally i have recently bought a Husq 357 to go with my 8yr old 335XPT (yes, you are reading this correctly!) and my 17yr old 268XP! and they are all performing fantastically for me on a daily basis with no special treatment other than stated in the manual.

That's very fair of you but you're still talking out of your arse
  6. Good an excuse as any to GET A SPANKIN' NEW SAW! Yeah!! You know you want to!
  7. guess you're right! I use my Judgment to sharpen my chains on a daily basis and just give them a go with a pair of calipers at the end of the week when i'm doing weekly maintenance! Slowly getting better at sharpening but still tend to get bendy cuts towards the end of a busy week!!
  8. So are the cannon bars good then? i was thinking of getting a 16" or 18" bar for my husq 357XP
  9. Guys just a quick question: I was at the APF show and on quite a few of the trade stands there were saws geared up with guide bars that were all black with orange writing on them - just wanted to know who makes them - if for no other reason than that it's driving me round the bend trying to remember the name!!!! Plus if anyone has any bars they use that are better than the usual Stihl/Husq/Oregon etc. I'd love to know!
  10. Do you not find that your saw cuts with a curve if some of the teeth are bigger than others?
  11. No point wearing balistics then!!

    Husky T425

Still haven't seen this saw appear on Husqvarna's official site - perhaps they're embarresed by it!! Compared to the build quality and attention to design of the rest of their saws the T425 is a bit of a Let - down! I had a try with one at the APF and just thought it looked like an unfulfilled concept (looked like a prototype).
  13. I hope to be alive with all my fingers and toes!

    pay

I put in my timesheet on the last friday of every month and my boss pays me within the first week of the next month.
  15. I would say i'm just a climber until i've learnt/experienced enough for people like you guys to recognise me as an arborist!
  16. I'd love to have some more information about fracture pruning and it's Pro's/Con's?! I'm currently in the mind that to (for example) reduce a tree overall, using fracture pruning cuts, might look a bit odd due to the fact that trees would not shed limbs uniformly over their entire crown? (I'm quite inexperienced and being the Devil's advocate here!) I'd also like to know how to pitch this technique to potential customers as i would guess it takes more time to carry out. Any info for and against would be greatly appreciated!!!!
  17. I was taught that Honey Fungus can infiltrate even quite mildly stressed trees - just a thought!
  18. When i was at Otley college a bunch of blokes from the Army turned up with makita saws one morning - off to do felling tickets of something - each saw was in a box about the size of a suitcase with spares/files/bars/chains etc.
  19. Nose Heavy?!! It's a saw not a boat!
  20. Is it me or are Husqvarna saws beginning to regain popularity? I know I'm a fan of their design and handling. I work for a firm near Lowestoft and usually use thier saws but for weekend work etc. i've got a Husky 335XPT and an old 268XP - both beautifully designed saws. What Top handles do people prefer?
  21. When you read workshop manuals for husky saws they say to adjust the high end revs so the saw ever so slightly "4-strokes" at full chat. Is this perhaps to supply a little extra oil to the piston/crankcase at times of engine loading?
  22. A trick that i've tried a couple of times (especially on noisy sites or when the chipper is running) is to give a couple of blasts on a bo'sun's whistle. unbelieveably loud plus you can create different tones and patterns with it so as to avoid confusion with an emergency whistle! Saves your voice a treat!!

    Close calls

I should imagine many a close call (or even incident) has been caused by the chipper prohibiting good comminucation!! I remember a nightmarish day lowering a big poplar tree with my boss. He was climbing and doing the rigging from the top and i was on the capstan. another collegue, despite me telling him not to, kept firing up the chipper at crucial moments and obliterating any instructions called down by my boss - very stressful!
  24. Yeah - sounds like you're right there about the experience! where can i get electrolyte powder from by the way? cheers to everyone for the valuable info!! First thread i've posted and i'm well chuffed with the response! great to know i'm coming into an industry with so many well informed and helpful people in it!!!
  25. One of the odd jobs i did when i was younger was work in a chippy! we used a contraption that worked in a very similar way!!!
