1. Hmm you could be right. Up until 2 years ago I had nearly 50K in the bank with no finance, loans etc, so I musta been doing something right back then. I tried upping our day rate back then when we were busy for a longish period and the amount of work winning dropped, so the rate had to drop, I'm more or less on the same rate I was 5 years ago. When you have a huge amount of new lads getting into the game every year and an already well established travelling community at it it isnt that easy to earn a wedge.
2. Narr just bad business men ie ME! I do win some jobs where I'm not the cheapest but I would say the vast majority are because I'm the cheapest. Although I do live in a city that has the highest percentage of deprivation in the country! Apparently.
3. Yeah but so will a high one. I would rather have some work and earn money than no work and earn nothing. Sometimes I think I live in a different world to some people. Its one where cost matters.
4. Yes yes yes. When no one had chippers or for that matter decent chainsaws the cost of tree work was more expensive. I/we have to compete and efficiency is the only way. I cant charge £300 for a £300 tree if my competitors are charging £200.
5. Apart from the costs this is what will happen. With the chipper you will become a lot more productive therefore knocking jobs out quicker , therefore probably lowering your rate for tree work, therefore you need more jobs to make the same amount of money, therefore running around like a blue arsed fly! Saying that theres no way I would go back to mashing brash with a saw! I'd be interested if there are fuel costs per hour for the small diesel engines we use in the chippers. I know there is somewhere but cant find where.
6. Indeed, I reckon one of my hobbo's could pull that shot off. War politics to one side looks like he did a good job there.
7. Have a good un. You log splitting mad man!
8. I good idea but more so for the groundies. Especially when doing good old conny hedge's where you can hardly see anything. I wouldnt bother for climbing unless you like the colour.
9. :congrats: Gotta say thats exactly how it should be. Too much effort goes into not letting the guy fall over and not into the job. Excellent thread again RCO as usual.
10. NOOOOOOO!!! Thats the best bit about weeping willows. I think the curtain/veil looks great.
11. Well you could wallop it back to nothing and it will do fine. Plus they always look good after a few years no matter what you do. Or maybe It can be hard to only slightly reduce the side unless it can be done without climbing as they are so brittle. Looks like there are loads of pruning points you can mess about with though.
12. Nice vid:thumbup1: Think Ive seen it before but always looks good. They didnt work any harder just slower.
13. Gotta be a 660 Have an 066 that will not die and cuts just as good as it did 10 years ago.
14. Also dont forget a higher carbon footprint (if thats the right term to use) in constantly managing the 'problem' Fell the knackered stuff and replace with good stock. By all means use the old timber/brash for habitat's.
15. I meant to ask you on the other thread, where did you buy the engine from because that does seem like a good price.
16. I like the look of that and think I'll give it a go. I couldnt get to grips with a hitchclimber an VT because I had to shorten it a lot so I could reach it when branch walking and twisting to one side. I think it was then too short to work properly and slipped quite a bit and didnt self tend.
17. What size chains have you got on the saws? I only ask because the 4mm file is usually for the picco sized chains. I just use the file until it doesnt bite into the chain, its just too much effort otherwise plus its easy to slip while filing with a poor file and land you with a nasty cut!
18. Yeah same here bowline and a prussik. Not the most efficient but guaranteed to work every time. Besides its simple and idiot proof, just as long as you can tie a bowline correctly. If anyone needs a hand on how to tie one I have a pic.
19. Congrats:thumbup: Time for a few of these An I hope youve been stocking up on this
20. So its not for his customers then like he claims!
21. If you dont get a response from Andy then PM him in case he misses this thread. I reckon its for his own garden tbh.
22. Lol this is most definitely fraud. You could also tell him to write blag invoices out for uneeded work ie someone charged him 2k to service machines, 1k to jet wash his yard, 30k for subbie work etc.
23. Is it only your wife you can do this with? If so any ideas why? And why?
24. Look at F R Jones dealer on right hand side of this page.
25. Heres a link HM Revenue & Customs: Rates and Allowances - Income Tax Unless your an old bogy then you can claim more Oh and try not to earn over 150K next year eh!!
