  1. A canker I'd say as a guess, perenial/bacterial...cherries are suckers for it! ( ?? )
  2. I know what you're thinking but better late than never....! It would be worth reading the comments made in response to the draft , available as a PDF from the QTRA website even if its only to endorse the concerns raised with the documents' content. The nature in which the standard has been conceived serves only to reinforce a total lack of " concensus" from the industry that will be arguably most involved with its eventual implementation.... The fact that the text is confused makes the document very unhelpful to comment on...a point that is well made if you chose to read the response referred to above....I too find myself thinking..here here. Most all the above posts are listed as concerns as they appear in the draft.... I'm not an experienced inspector/assessor/surveyor of trees by any means. I am tho' glad that I find myself in agreement largely with comments contained in the response noted above.
  3. Its always a shame to hear this sort of thing, actually quite surprising in this instance....there's always the exception that proves the rule. Personally, I found the rope to be of the highest quality. I thought of it as having a generally very good reputation. Even more reason then to find it somewhat stupefying that Yale have not simply replaced the rope and apologised for the inconvenience....Good luck .
  4. From the course designers...... http://www.trees.org.uk/downloads/treeinspect.pdf

  15. Have heard tell the same folklore superstitions...just cos we are capitalist, doesnt mean we need to be cultureless aswell( ?? )\ In pont of fact, in this part of the country, holly was used by the agricultural fraternity to mark drainage points, ditches and water table info, essential for the management of arable/livestock resource.....Cant imagine why livllihood should be so closeley associated with such things myself?!>>><><><>

  18. Google it Ian..there are common as.....plenty info out there.....What they are saying re deadwood habitat is fair in academic terms...read the detail and you will be moved to fell immediately!!! I jest...really. The fact that you were climbing the tree suggests that it was/appeared to be in good ish health....fair? The fungus appears most usually on beech and dead wood additionally. Inspect by all means....It would be prudent as was said especially if the site warrants concern as to duty of care....I concur....REMEMBER however......the fungi dont read the books...... Whilst their edibility is not in question, it remains a matter of taste....the gluten ( slime ) is not so easily washed......
  19. looks like Porcelein fungus.. edible once you wash the gluten off!!
  20. Basic??
  21. Hi, If you have done this certification can you give me some pointers as to what I might I read in advance of the course.... The obvious things would seem to be BS3998 BS5837 & BS8516 I know what their blurb says re: prerequisite knowledge. What I dont know is the level of knowledge you are expected to have in reality....statements like " detailed" are not very quantitative if you take my meaning. Suggestions then as to a reading list would be v. useful....Thank you ( ps..I just noticed there appears to be no smiley for a simple thank-you on this forum!!!!)
  22. Add to that Fungal Strategies of Wood Decay in Trees...although perhaps it could refer to a wider range of species it will nonetheless afford you an invaluable insight to the types of decay we deal with, how they work and what to expect from infection in trees etc.... ( Schwarze, Engels & Mattheck ) Springer press.
  23. £ 15.00.......pretty damn typical for this kind of show frankly......
  24. You right to wanna get rid wood asap also...as you go kinda thing!!
