I also live close to a nuclear power station, when they built it they laid the founds for its replacement, id rather they built the second one and left the spruce trees alone. if they did build it it would generate more power than all the turbines in scotland put together.. Makes more sense to me....

Of course its all about money, Near here they are felling about 500 acres of semi mature sitka in order to put up a wind farm, no doubt they got a grant to plant them, and now they have one to fell them and put up turbines. At least they are taking some timber away. At another wind farm locally they mulched about 300 acres with a mulch head on a 360. 12 seconds a tree, one after the other..... mental when you think about it.

The new defender engines aren't that bad, but too small IMO, they have a clever electronics that attempt to mimic low down torque which thee do to some extent but there's no getting away from it, more displacement and a longer stroke would be better. Mine tows the tractor nicely but its had an ecu remap, and I don't know how long the engine will last with all the hard work it gets. I'd like a new defender with a bit more room in the cab and a 3 litre v6. If you want a reliable engine lengthen the stroke and limit the revs, this is why tractors and lorries only rev to 2000 ish but can do a million miles, and why f1 engines rev to 18000 but only last 1 race. In their effort to make modern diesels more refined they have made them less gutsy and probably shortened their lifespan.

I remember when I loaned my brother my defender, he couldn't believe how much nicer it towed than his navara, not the power, just the suspension soaking up all the jolts from a long trailer. The tri-axle trailers are even worse apparently.. I have been thinking about an american truck too, that yellow thing on top gear the other night looked good.

For the last five years all the pickups available have been made for hairdressers. Its really depressing this, I will replace my defender in 18 months or so and it looks like there will be nothing to replace it with. I hate all the current offerings, and I need a 3.5 ton tow for the little tractor. I have a friend who has and Isuzu and he reckons its not a patch on his old trooper for towing. My brother had 2 new shape navaras and both were unreliable and i never liked driving them. I find all these pickups much of a muchness, trying to be too car like, massive rear overhang, cart springs on the back so you feel every little bump of the trailer. And small engines with loads of power and no low down grunt. I googled the G Waggon to see what they were like as I had always liked the old ones.... they start at £70k! So I won't be getting one of those. What I want is a truck that will tow 3.5, do 70mph without screaming, be good off road and be able to take a few knocks without loosing half its value. My Defender ticks all those boxes, its such a shame they are no longer making them.

Ironically I was reading this thread while in the waiting room at the eye clinic, I got rust in my eye on thursday, stupidly left it till friday night by which time I was in agony. Got it taken out at the local hospital, had to be driven there as I couldn't see properly. Today it was still blurry and didn't feel right so I went to the eye clinic in edinburgh and they found some more rust, which they pulled out with a needle. Its sore now the anaesthetic is wearing off. Goggles would have ben a good idea.

The big ones usually do as they are told, its the smaller ones that tend to go bang. The main thing is forget the NPTC rules on the size of your gob, go where the sound wood is, if that means a tiny gob then so be it, if it means a massive one then do it. Don't worry about the wood in the centre, just try and get some live wood at either side, don't leave it too thick either, 15% max, it will go with the lean so fell it that way.. In this vid I was felling some biggish crack willows, they were 80-90 foot. The only thing I'd say is don't lean over the back of the tree (as I do ) when checking your cuts as if it goes like Matty's did you could get a sore chin.... [ame] [/ame]

I know of two farmers round here who got done, one had taken a load of scrap off the farm to a scrap yard, and the other was taking a load of waste wood to the Nov5th bonfire in the village... If you are driving to a legitimate job (forestry, farming, horticulture, building site) and are only taking a legitimate machine (see the regulations) then you are ok. The moment you transport chip or timber you should be on white, I think. Best plan is get this \l/ \l/ \l/ printed on a tarp and put it over your trailer.

We just planted 400 fro edinburgh council, we used soft slings and a mini digger for the big ones, They were off loaded with a tele handler though.

Reading the link above leads me to believe that you should appeal. Roadside trees are clearly ok.

On the VOSA site it says that if the trees are road side then red is ok, but for anything domestic then its not. But also it depends what is on your mog, if its just a crane then its mobile plant, and again red is fine, if it has a chip bin then it hauls for hire or reward and it needs to be on white. So my tractor and heizo is ok to travel to and from site on red, but if I haul chip or timber then it has to be on white. We run on both, but we don't change filters....

What do you feed into these machines? how fine / dry does it have to be?
