  1. Looking at the poll results I don't think Arbtalk is representative of the population at large. It would be interesting if the greens outpolled labour 2:1...
  2. Politicians of all parties want you to believe that, unfortunately its just not true. The bank bailout only amounted to a small proportion of our national debt. RBS for example got 80 billion, the national debt is 200 times that amount! we overspent massively in the lead up to the bank bailout because Gordon Brown borrowed huge amounts in the belief that the economy would continue to grow exponentially allowing him to pay it back, it didn't. The banks were the straw that broke the camel's back for sure, but the real problem was spending more than we earned year on year...
  3. Nice one Robert, I wouldn't fancy reversing the Valtra down there.
  4. Do you mean a land drive PTO i.e. proportional speed to the wheels? They are getting rare these days although my alpine has that ability, I don't think you'd want that for grass cutting though..

    My accident

Stick with it, I'm sure there will be good days and bad days, you can always vent your spleen on here when necessary. Wishing you all the best.
  6. Contact one of your local farmers who burns biomass, many of then have batch boilers that can burn that kind of thing whole, ask £20 a ton or less and they ought to be happy to take it, they will have the kit to load and haul it too.
  7. I just chalked this on the road outside... 2nd row, fifth one along.
  8. We have some travellers moved in a couple of miles away, just seen some kids with lurchers mooching around near the yard. Does anyone know what the signs / symbols that they use to mark out future "jobs" look like? Someone told me the other day of an old couple who had been stung several times, once for a block paved drive. They had built a "sucker" symbol into the blocks themselves.... I had to laugh.
  9. If you were rescuing me I wouldn't thank you for messing around with any gizmo's, I'd just want to get down, you can bail out two guys on the one hitch in an emergency. or if the climbers rope hasn't been cut you can work both hitches.
  10. Very good Mark, Very good.
  11. Thsts only because statistically the chances of someone being hit by any tree are extremely low. It probably is too small to kill someone in a car but could still kill a pedestrian. It needs management of some kind either felling or regular pollarding, but looking at the costs of pollarding you could re-plant and have a well established healthy tree for a lot less money. This is the specification for the 400 or so trees we have recently planted for Edinburgh Council, while nothing is vandal proof this goes a long way towards protecting them. Its 3 round stakes around the root ball with 6" weld mesh surrounding, its very sturdy and supports the tree well as well as protecting from vandals. Perhaps unsightly, but it does the job.
  12. Does anyone know what the bearing is made from? We have managed to bend the back plate on ours and I want to heat it to straighten it, but I am worried that its a nylon block bearing which may melt...
  13. I think we get far too hung up about saving trees sometimes, unless re-pollarded biannually that tree will still have too much sail for my liking. Why take the chance? Sooner or later a retained tree like that will kill someone and then where will the recriminations lead?
  14. Fell. I don't see why anyone would want to keep a tree like that in a location like that. The whole point of the pollarding is to keep it pollarded, when thats in leaf the wind sail will be large, possibly as large as before it was cut.

    Valtra

They are like hens teeth, I went all the way from Scotland to dorset to get my first one. The second one I bought as a stand alone and added the crane. Its an expensive option though....
  18. Buy a decent base vehicle then get a tipper made for it. You'll probably have a better choice.
  19. I also live close to a nuclear power station, when they built it they laid the founds for its replacement, id rather they built the second one and left the spruce trees alone. if they did build it it would generate more power than all the turbines in scotland put together.. Makes more sense to me....
  20. Of course its all about money, Near here they are felling about 500 acres of semi mature sitka in order to put up a wind farm, no doubt they got a grant to plant them, and now they have one to fell them and put up turbines. At least they are taking some timber away. At another wind farm locally they mulched about 300 acres with a mulch head on a 360. 12 seconds a tree, one after the other..... mental when you think about it.
  21. Reading this thread feminism still has a way to go. I had a gay guy work for me for a while, Imagine a thread like this about him... Innocuous but offensive to some all the same.. A girl working in tree work shouldn't be news really.
  22. I don't have a problem with fracking, with the proper controls we have nothing to fear. When you look around the world today having your own energy sources can only be a good thing.
  23. Good luck with the recovery. Hope its a swift one.
  24. Sad news. Does anyone think he ended his own life? Assisted Suicide? He had been campaigning for the right over the last few years, He has my full support in that campaign too. Just the way his death was tweeted by his daughter and the fact that it seems so soon after he was on TV campaigning......
  25. Overall my land rovers have been more reliable than the transits that I have had.
