  1. The authour Iain Rankin, very nice down to earth guy. Gave me a cheque on the day which is always a bonus.
  2. We pruned a line of limes once on a sheltered housing complex. It was a breezy day and the sawdust blew around a bit. One old bag got upset about the dust on her car despite the fact that we had all the cars moved away from the trees first thing and that I had blown the dust off twice over the course of the day. She went round all the other flats telling everyone and suddenly we had a sort of zimmer riot, they just had nothing better to do. Still if all you do all day is watch repeats of Quincey and cash in the attic what can you expect. When i get like that its time for the humane killer.
  3. I've got a cannon carver that was black and orange.
  4. I'm sitting my PTI exam tomorrow, I'll let you know what it's like. I'm thinking pretty hard. I've been brushing up on my fungal id's lately but yesterday thay gave us a mock test, on a whole load of dried wisened specimens that looked nothing like those in the books. I only got 4 out of 10:scared1:
  5. Nice work, wish we had a bit more weather like that. BTW get a petzl carry tool: no more lowering rope between the teeth:001_tongue:
  6. May I just say thank you for kindly propping up the world economy with 1.8 trillion dollars of your hard earned cash. It seems to have done the trick... for now. The last time you "saved " our economy it took us 50 years to pay you back, so generous of you to make it a gift this time, once again many thanks.

568 mile round trip for me, broke it up by visiting the in laws, just got back. I saved £500 on the list price of the Hobbs though and It was a good day out so worth it. Hopefully it wont go further south though, anyone go when it was near Lockerbie?

    It was down south!
  9. Its hard to say from the pictures but you may be able to remove one or two stems completely if they are individual trees and not conjoined at the base. This could give a much more dramatic effect, and coupled with a crown lift leave a much healthier tree/s than a reduction would.
  10. Seven big sticks should get a big sawmill interested, they like a full lorry load so they'd need to be big.
  11. This thread gould go on for ever, I have an 8" greenmech, it chips very well especially conifer because of the fine chip it makes. I could'nt go for one of the heavier makes like a bandit cause the van would struggle to pull it but with a landy you could have any make you like.

I thought it was pretty good, went yesterday and bought a Hobbs block and an art rope guide, looked at lots of firewood processors and other bits and bobs. I might not buy a processor for 18 months but now i have seen them working I have a much better feel for whats out there. Thats what these shows are all about.
  13. I don't know is the honest answer but I'll keep you posted.
  14. My gran told me that when I was little, I have tried them, they're quite bitter but would probably be ok in a cheese sandwich. Thats Agaricus arvensis, the Horse Mushroom, quite easy to identify; by their size appart from anything else. You're right Dean though I would'nt eat anything unless i was absolutely sure what it was, I'm trying to learn more as I go on, right now thats one of a very few that I'd be prepared to try.
  15. Quite agree Dean, I found this this afternoon, Having it for tea.
  16. In light of Hucks distillery story, Have you ever deliberately slowed down on a job in case the client feels like they're paying too much? I used to work for a guy who used to do that, he had a four man team and a u1650 with a 12" bandit on the front, we could get through some stuff with it! I remember once turning up at a job to take down a row of 30' leylandii we felled them and using the chippers winch fed them whole streight through, the whole job probably took less than an hour, I dont'know how much he charged but the client semed a little surprised.
  17. Three is the magic number, unless you've got a Very long drag.
  18. Sorry to hear that, this recession thing sucks, but with your skills / qualifications a good job should be just around the corner.
  19. Nice looking pine Blaster, what species is that?
  20. Sample of material has arrived, i have told the supplier to improve the price, I'll keep you posted.
  21. Just in case you're replacing the box because that pipe that runs down the outside of the box and back in at the bottom has split / corroded. Don't. Mine went a while back and they said you had to buy a new box, very expensive. Just take the pipe to somwhere that mot's trucks, its made of the same stuff as some 7.5 tonner brake pipes, they can just make one up.
  22. I'd say meripilus, looks like a beech stump too which would fit.
  23. Don't suppose you've got a video of that.
  24. I currently have about 6 weeks work booked in. I have only got one new job in the last three weeks. This is not looking good, I have lots of timber to split and once one or two late payers cough up I'll have a bit of cash in the bank butin the long term things look a bit bleak. I blame Alistair "Wur doomed, doomed ah tell ye" Darling.
  25. I have'nt been as yet but i reckon around the £5 mark would do.
