  1. I agree, but often the 'big boys' win massive contracts that they aren't capable of servicing on their own. If you are prepared to take them on you can do well. The trick is not go get in too deep with any one crowd or sector for that matter. We are about 25% public sector 25% domestic, 25% commercial and 25% Subby.
  2. We do a lot of subbing, it's ok if you trust the firm you work for, I had a nightmare with Glendale, I wouldn't work with them again. But then ihave done maybe £150 with another firm last year with no problems. You need to watch out for Marks and Spencer syndrome. This is when you begin subbing for a firm and then you get to a stage where thy give you so much work that you can't afford to loose them, then they have you by the short and curlies.
  3. This should have been considered by the FC on the felling licence application.
  4. No that was fitted in. It was touching the back ramp though.
  5. I used to fit a jensen 530 into an for 8x5 cage side plant trailer, it was a tight fit, you'd need to measure carefully before purchasing.
  6. We have the Denon Enveya Mini, it's got good sound and it's water resistant so it's good for the garden. About £80 I think.
  7. I saw one that was multi-stemmed that went the same way, stem by stem over about 3 years. It was some sort of fungal infection, at one point mycelium / mould like fruiting bodies could be seen coming from cracks in the bark. These appeared and then disappeared. We took it down a few months ago. Yours could be some kind of phytopthora though.
  8. If you're running your own firm with all the hassle that that brings you need to be on £30-50k or it just isn't worth it. Seriously why bother? Just get a job as a charge hand at the council, no stress and easy work.
  9. They do make excellent quality chip, the best of any disc chipper I have used.
  10. Tp's are good solid chippers, I like them. But pound for pound they aren't as good at chipping as a Forst. That said they are good. All the ones I have had / got are pto machines so I can't comment on the road tow one.
  11. My 12" bandit is available for hire..
  12. Which schleising have you got John?
  13. What's it like with some weight in the back? Our ducker200 is a bit low on the front when the back is empty and no weights. But it's not as bad as 6". I have been thinking about upgrading to a schleising, but it's a lot of money. Would you be interested in the ducker?
  14. On mine the taperlock on the cast iron pulley had a hairline crack allowing it to move along the shaft. This increased the gap between the spokes and the sensor, it also allowed the blades to contact the anvil eventually.. worth checking. The taperlock should have one split in it along the radius, not two!
  15. Have you asked Forst? Their tech support is pretty good..
  16. I bought that one, I'm hiring it out if you're interested?
  17. The online versions are good, if hackers got in you'd be covered by the banks / software company. Still might be worth taking a backup once in a while though. The big advantage of the online version is that you can prepare quotes on a tablet in the garden of the customer as you walk round the job. The customer accepts online and when the job is done you can invoice it with a few clicks before you leave the job.
  18. You don't have to go through your accountant to get xero. Just subscribe on line. And ask for a discount at the accountants as there should be less work for them to do.
  19. Very sad, my thoughts are with his family.
  20. The economics of that just don't add up, you could get 100ton a year chipped by a contractor way cheaper than you could buy a chipper that size. You'd have to keep the chipper 20 years to make it pay.
  21. Digging a few stumps out today. Needed the winch to help on this one. Nice looking setup John.
