  1. I'll be sticking to Alex Price!! he's not cheap, BUT it will be RIGHT!!!!
  2. I think the soft woods in the distance are confusing you.
  3. LOL!!!!!!!!! Thats cheap!!! That would get me ONE tyre for my mog or 1/3 of a service
  4. Some trades are in reality both service providers and retailer, so do get two bites of the cherry. Personally I like the fact that I don't need to buy in materials, it must be a right pain.
  5. He may not receive ANY of the invoiced amount, bankrupted firm or some other reason. If we don't get paid for a one day job, we are out of pocket for the labour and equipment costs etc. The pipe layer would ALSO be out of pocket for the materials, hence greater risk.
  6. The pipe layer is taking the risk that he may not receive the money for the pipe, which he has paid for. The higher the risk you take in business, the higher the return. Also we need to make sure we are charging appropriately for our gear, IE 4 men at £100 a man plus truck at say £90, chipper maybe £75, = £565 Or you can make a charge for the removal of the arisings, on smaller jobs you can consider what it would cost them if they got a skip and add maybe 50% of what that would have cost, so they are making a saving but you are covering your costs and making a little more profit.
  7. Happy birthday mate!!!!!!!!! I really need to remember to check the lounge
  8. Only 2 seats in the cab mate, but a great machine all the same!!!
  9. IME, there is no one in our game, be it cutting or timber, making easy money!!! You can make a good living BUT as you say, we earn every penny!!!!
  10. I heard of a guy who did a days trial in the woods for a firm, he got his saw stuck, got another saw to free the first and cut through the handle of the first saw!!!!!!!!
  11. On big trees I will normally decide which side of the hinge in under compression and cut that side first, cutting as close too the back of the hinge as I feel is safe and then move to the tension side of the hinge and cut until it starts to go. Does that make any sense at all???????

An "arse twitcher" is the tree you climb, that every one else quoted a MEWP for
  15. Yes, can't remember how much, I think it was few months payments.
  16. Firewood??? ME?????? NO!!!!!!!
  17. That system does not get round the problem that the logs catch on the inside of the nets. IMO your better off with the tipping tray systems, where you stack the logs in a sort of steel drawer, then slide the bag over, tip the drawer and the logs and bag slid off.
  18. If you have a breakdown and they can't fix it the same day they bring you a replacement machine that day and take yours away for repair. A sort of "courtesy chipper"
  19. I talked to them at the AA, can't remember the details, but if I recall correctly you could always have a chipper that was no more than 3 years old with full back up for around £3K per year.
  20. Only the heart wood will rot, which is in real terms is dead any way so doesn't matter. The new growth will not rot. When you find old coppice stools they are normally hollow, its not a problem The slopping cuts don't rot thing, is a bit of a myth. In fact standing water actually stops rot, it used to be considered good practice to drain water filled cavity's, but not now.
