  1. Mine used to twist, green and orange, (with a prussic) we are talking New England here, aren't we?????
  2. I'm playing devils advocate here tom, but they don't make as much as some think. In fact before the big insurance crash when the "names" were called in, they made almost no profit on premiums. They just used the cash they had from premiums to pay the stock market and thats where they made their money. Since the .com bubble bust they have restructured to make their money from premiums, with a more suitable business model.
  3. The guy who delivers my firewood out (by the arctic load) is flat out for one of the sawmills, he struggles to find a spare day to run out a couple of loads for me.
  4. As I understand it the government is the insurer of last resort, if you cannot get insurance from any where else, THEY MUST offer you cover. Its a really tricky situation, its a little like kidnap ransom demands. If the uninsured just get paid out by the tax payer why should any of us bother PAYING for insurance?? If your home is GOING to flood its not really insurance its assurance, which is much more expensive. I don't know what the answer is, but its not simple, IMO.
  5. The thing is now more people are burning wood the less wood WE will get, I don't takeaway half the about of wood to day that I did 12months ago. Even on council jobs they are sending a truck for the timber. And on private jobs if the customer doesn't burn wood they know some one who does. I reckon soon we will be taking very little wood home.
  6. Good stuff, trees that size don't come up to often.
  7. I would have thought round your way if you just made it look like you wanted it someone would nick it
  8. If you have employees you need to tick all the boxes, if its your firm and your doing the cutting, felling or what ever, I don't think you need to worry too much.
  9. Last time I looked (admittedly a while ago) chipper training was not even on the HSE recommended list. FTR, I have never had "formal" training in the use of chipper, or any other tree work for that matter!!
  10. Yes he was in my thought today too. Very, very sad.
  11. My answer would be:- Because I have been using my skills on a daily basis for the last 15 years and in all that time the way trees grow and the laws of physics have not changed. I took my driving test 23 years ago, I have not been asked to take a refresher for that and IMO driving to site is the most dangerous part of my day
  12. Its easy to by busy making no profit. I'd stay at home doing jack before I would even think about doing one of those for £100!! Its a joke mate, walk, no RUN away.
  13. The main thing is to do with expenditure, we spend in a very similar way, whether we are doing arb or forestry. Most of our outlay is on labour and equipment, not stock, we retail very little. If you are a landscaper you are buying in lots of materials etc, we are not.
  14. ROAD CLOSED!!! YES THAT MEANS YOU TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had a road closure today, to get some trees out of a river for the council and nearly got run over by some stupid woman. I had to create a physical barrier to stop them!!!!!!!
  15. To be honest if you stat worrying about things like this, you'll spend your life worrying. Its always gone on and always will.
  16. As I put earlier, its a ROUGH guide, if you don't think you are able to spot the exceptions stick to looking in the catalog
  17. If I was concerned I would ask my insurer, get their reply in writing, if things do go wrong they are the ones who will be covering your ass, IMO.
  18. There is NO tree surgery category.
  19. Thats what we did, we save minimum £800 per years plus its less admin.
  20. No its the first two numbers, the "1" has replaced the "0". Its just a rough guide, such as 020t or ms200t is pro, 192t is not. If you don't get it fine, just forget about it, my dealer told me it was a useful guide many years ago, I have found it of use, I'm sure you aways have a catalog to hand, so find it of no use.
  21. I thought the tree used its starch reserves from the root to survive until sufficient new foliage is produce. So depleting the root?
