  11. Just coming to the end of two years of college and then start in the bussiness for real. Sorry Andy but a bit pessimistic to say what are us new students going to do this year..my cups half full mate. Might see whats happening in Europe.
  12. That is a truly cowboy cut..terriable pruning work!! rest assured i will not be doing a topping job, just small end forks under 40mm with 25% removed so the trees can still produce sugars.
  13. Cheers max.
  14. yep i thought light 25% reduction. Although the main stem is my worry its more than 40mm so decay will set in worse there. cheers max.
  15. Another query post im afraid, I guy has asked me to reduce his two Betula pendulas. There both have good vigor and our 27-30 foot high. I know that Betula species dont react very good to wounding unless the wounds are under 40mm and the tree is in good nick. The main trunk is thicker. What i want to ask is , is it worth saying dont bother as the tree will go down hill from then on if its wounded and a few more years later it will probably need felling anyhow due to xylem dysfunction and further rot or leave it and let it do its thing for another twenty years or so? Thing is , if you prune them they become brittle. I think the owner is just worried about them geting to tall. Whats your experince on Betula species?
  16. thanks for finding that, made me chuckle. Like the foot suckers, the future of tree climbing maybe?
  17. Dont want to be boring...but yes looks like an old graft, the swelling on either side of the trunk gives it away.
  18. Anyone going to it this year? Im there (thursday) with otley college , doing some demostrations. mushroom making (not the halocogenic type) ,pole climbing , pole rescue , ariel rescue and talking to the public about arb. Wednesday and thursday next week , drop by and say Hi.
  19. Cheers Jonsie, did that and got it on, hope i did it tight enough..dont want the bugger coming undone at 30ft. Cheers guys, many thanks. C
  20. agree with Rock ape..its the buzz of excitment a challenge , the adrenalin rush you get and doing something diffrent to the norm. I love it , the challenge of pushing body and mind to the edge. i served witht the raf regiment at honnigton , attached to them in Kuwait in 1995. good lads.
  21. looks like a shearing crack, fell it! I will only get worse.
  22. Great another couple of mature lads..me too 40 and just starting out on the road, well a year in to it.Goning for CS30-31 in 3 weeks. If your fit , dont mind hard work and stubborn like me you will make it. Ive always been active in work espically when i was in the army. I want fit work..keeps me young.
  23. never get over the fear..then you get complacent and make mistakes. fear is good , keeps you on your toes. i still get a rush every time i climb , keeps me thinking saftey , and switched on.
  24. will keep em peled downhere to in Suffolk, maybe they should keep driving north in to the sea! Swines!
  25. Well done Nick, good up their isnt it? I havnt climbed for a few weeks been doing felling for my CS30-31 last 5 weeks...be up there soon.
