  1. just because something is protected doesnt mean you cant get a license to control them, i personally would try and sort it out asap, I currently in one of my roles, co-ordinate a large scale mink control program over about 200km of river, and i would have been happier if someone had done this about 20yrs ago whilst it was achievable be proactive not reactive!
  2. i use a jumper or coat over my light weight winches 4mm cable i dont think they would be heavy enough to take the shock out of a bigger cable
  3. i just mill for my own use, so i wouldnt know about the value, but its handy for nice timber in tight locations i mill to a size where it can be carried out or lifted onto the atv trailer if access allows
  4. power sockets, washbasin, mine hasnt even got a chuffin radio! mine is ex council so had no optional extras
  5. Pics please love my 130 tdi winch is on the wish list
  6. i have been burning alder for the last two months it was felled in march and is burning lovely and hot, doing most my cooking and hot water on it. i would now take alder over most other timbers for firewood, going to plant a load more coppice with it as it takes so well.
  7. i have done some beech in the past and ended up with the washboard effect, any tips on how to avoid this? was i pushing it through to fast, it was using oregon ripping chain, and involved lots of sanding to remove the ripples Charlie
  8. Hi mate, ring bagshaws and ask them to send you any farm sale catalogs as they come up, also graham watkins will send you catalogs free as well

    aspen 2

i have always justified its use, but at that kind of money its crazy, i do like the stuff and all my kit is set up on it, but a 60p/ltr increase is stupid its now nearly 3x the cost of petrol, im going to have to look at just using it on the jobs i have to. Its a shame as i do buy into all the benefits health and environmental,
  12. i have done very small diameter alders (6-12") on a reservior bank, leaning towards the water, we felled them by attaching a small electric winch, (superwinch 2000lb) although a tirfor would do the same job, put your gob cut in the direction of fell but make it upside down, so the flat bit is at the top if that makes sense, tension the tirfor so its just taking a bit of tension then put your back cut is as normal, about 1/2" below the top of the gob as you progress get the tifor operator to start to tension the cable, and it should come over fine, just leave a good hinge (a bit more than normal) as if they are small the tirfor will pull them over ok, the winch cable only needs to be as high as you can set it from the ground, where we were felling was steeper than 45degrees

    aspen 2

well finally the local dealers got some aspen in at last after a wait of 6wks went to pick some up......well what can i say, at least dick turpin wore a mask, £14.99 for 5litres thats a 60p/litre price rise, is this now because it comes in a husky branded can and they have changed the name from 2T? could any of the dealers on here let me know if this is the new standard price or are my local suppliers taking the micky? (bearing in mind in normally buy 15-30litres of the stuff at a time)
  14. td5 discos are rubbish, the old man has one, it seems gutless as hell and has a stupid rev limiter thingy that i kept triggering when i drove it as it just didnt seem to be picking up well. my 300tdi 130twin cab can eat his td5 for breakfast
  15. you can get this beast Dolmar Petrol Saw PS34/35cm Quickset in Metal Case with Extra Accessories from Westfalia at our Hedge trimmers inside the Gardening shop
  16. we had one of our big oaks hit over summer, it blew a 10" wide strip of bark of down one side of the tree, you could see where it had spiraled down the crown, but now two months on it has just shed a load of limbs mainly where the strike had spiraled through the crown, i will try and get some pics when i am up near there again
  17. i had two quotes for my 300tdi defender clutch replacement last weekend, £420 and £500, the £500 was the local garage that normally gets used and they wanted it all week the £420 quote was a big well known garage locally i had it back the following evening, if its like the 300tdi you do need to take the engine out as its easier, but even so that does sound a bit high, the clutch kit for mine was £125 the rest was labour
  18. thats the jobbie the v888 form, we use it to get information about poachers up here to get addresses to take legal action against them, its the EA who should be dealing with this as its a waste offence and they are the statutory agency dealing with waste
  19. i have a 346xpg, that i bought second hand, its a great little saw, heated handle is great on it, i have fiddled about with mine and opened up the exhuast on it, i have a thread on here somewhere how i did it, but mine is the 46cc version not the newer 50cc, and even so it has a 15" bar and will handle oak half that size again without any bother, i have a 372xp and whilst the power is awesome its not a coppicing saw mine normally runs a 24" bar I bet once you start to use it, you will not use the 290 much after that even for firewood Charlie
  20. This is the whole grey area again, our game keeper went to DVLA offices locally and asked about distances from base etc, and he was told he was fine to travel as far as he needed as long as it was related to the work. But like you said a friend in cumbria was told the 1km rule, i dont think they know really
  21. i have a 1000kg one i can drop onto the tow hitch of my landy, very handy indeed, great for pulling out smaller stuff up banking. Tow Ball Mounts | Bumpers and Winchplates | Winch Solutions
  22. definatly not, my agri plated atv this year has cost me nearly £800 they have changed any new policies to reflect that of normal cars, where by you build up no claims, thats with NFU, although that does cover a trailer, my seed spreader and sprayer unit as well. also you dont need an mot, but you are limited to 25mph on ag plates, i didnt think the distance thing mattered on ag plated atv, its if its registered as plg and you apply for limited distance exemption that it comes in, although its a grey area. C
  23. picked up a 576xp in the dealers the other week, he was treating himself which says a lot in my books if the dealer is using that saw himself. the handles are different between the 372 and 576, i prefer the 372 the 576 was more like the newer stihls if that makes any sense. I would like to get some time on the 576 especially the autotune version which i think would help a lot with saw maintainance as it eliminates the requirement for carb tuning depending on a range of factors, down side i can see is i like to slightly richen my saws up for milling etc, i would advise trying both if you can see which you get on best with
  24. The World Logging Championships 2008, All winners: Overall winner: Johann Raffl, Italy – Husqvarna 372XP Events: Tree felling: Gottfried Schädlich, Germany – Husqvarna 372XP Fitting another chain: Gerhard Briechle, Germany – Stihl MS 460 Bucking by combined cut: Ilya Shvetsov, Russia – Husqvarna 372XP Precision cut: Ole Kjaer, Denmark – Jonsered 2071 (husky 372 in another colour Limbing: Vadim Imankulov, Russia – Husqvarna 372XP you can keep your orange and white boys saws evidently the stihl user had nothing better to do than practise swapping chains
