  1. Hey Montyslater Just wondering if it's possible to dig the stumps/roots out as well? I see two potential avenues with fine wood carving & resprouting the rooted logs for bonsai raw material. I'd leave it till late september to get the most potential from the destruction :-)
  2. Hey Roseyweb Are you still looking for somewhere to offload the elm? Cheers Nod
  3. Hey Julian Bicester & Buckingham are my local towns; can't give a shout to myself but long history of high quality work at all technical levels, pruning/felling. Thanks Nod http://www.horizontreecare.co.uk
  4. Awesome body language in the third image. Defo Phaeolus- move the caravan! :-0
  5. Hey Hedgeman Pretty sure I'll be able to sort something if you're interested, give me a call. 07971 830331 Cheers Nod
  6. When all determining factors are taken into consideration; that being an extensive understanding of species morphology & biomechanics coupled with an equally extensive knowledge of available systems & their pros & cons, as well as side tracking all of the very convincing sales literature. Only then, and with an open discussion with the client, can the most appropriate & valid choice be made. Whether that be invasive, non-invasive or non interventionist is irrelevent as the whole situation should dictate what approach to take. And even then, there can be no guarantee that your vision of what will happen in years to come will actually take place. We listen to others & take heed, we do our own thing & take heed & we occasionally go with a gut instinct & take heed. Ultimately non of it means we are right & hit the perfect solution but it is our job to try & one day we are proved correct & the next day not. This is our lot & we'd be a tad more enlightened if we remain open to all possibilities. Where does our knowledge come from anyways?? :-)
  7. Hey Ed Hadn't seem the jobs prior to arriving on site as it was a subbie job so I couldn't make a plan beforehand. Nod
  8. Hey Reg Nice vid & good advice mate. Went blind into two jobs this past week that turned out to lend themselves ideally to zipline removal. I found that controlling the initial movement of the limb could be achieved really well by employing only a directed backcut so that the MA in the zipline pulling on the limb could orient in line with the zip before final severance. Obviously this is only possible with fibrous timbers but does work very well. If there are other trees available then zipping can offer more possibilites by using them as rig poles. Cheers Nod
  9. For the many people who have asked & those who are maybe wondering, the cost of the Japan tour has not been settled yet as we are awaiting confirmation of certain cost. The trip will be all inclusive of travel, food, access to sites, guides & interpreter. My current estimation is in the region of £2500 but this is yet to be confirmed. Thanks Nod
  10. Our host for the trip is a practising niwash ( tree pruner) & it will be an integral part of the trip. I don't think there will be any hands on pruning but we'll organise nimaki oriented visits for sure.
  11. :001_smile:Hey Folks Been thinking about the jumble sales (trade events) coming up in the next six months & wondered if there are specific products you'd like to see Treeworker share with its visitors. Or if you see solutions to specific problems but can't work out what kit, if it exists, that you need. Keep us informed & I'll see what I can dig out of the crevasses that have formed in the shed. Climb cool & see you soon. ;-) Nod
  12. pages 33-36.pdf G'day Folks I've attached a recent article following a study trip I made to Japan last November. Off the back of this I'm working with a number of Japanese arborists to organise a tree adventure to south west Japan in October 2014. Japan has in the region of 7000 native plants compared to approximately a thousand in the UK which makes it an incredibly diverse part of the world. Along with a 1000year documented history of tree management & pruning its domestic & shrine/temple gardens are a feast for any arbophile. Although the final details have not been agreed upon the schedule will consist of 7-8 full days in Japan plus flights to & from. Currently it's looking something along these lines. 1.Kyoto, Nara area : Japanese gardens, temple and shrine-visits. ↓ 2.Wakaya Mt'Koya area : tree crimbing and stay at small place near a temple with experience of life with the monks ↓ 3.Wakayama Nachi area : Onsen( hot spring) and hiking on the ancient road in the sacred Wakayama mountains ↓ 4.Shikoku Island: ( the smallest main-island of Japan) the popular place for Buddhist pligrims and enjoy Bonsai nurseries ↓ 5.Silky visit: small tour at the factory of the world-famous saw-company, Silky. Culturally the Japanese experience is exhausting as, although it's a very westernized country, most of their aesthetic is so different from ours it fills even mundane moments with so much to view & ponder. The trip is being organised through the Canopy Spirit project which began last year with an organised tree climbing swaree in West Africa. A facebook page can be found here, https://www.facebook.com/CanopySpirit with past events & discussions of those involved being open to all. Any excess funds raised from the Canopy Spirit tours are channelled into the Makasutu Wildlife Trust & Ballabu Conservation Project with a developing schools project connected to the Eden Projects Gardens for Life scheme. Should you be interested in the Japan tour or the proposed trip to the Gambia, West Africa in May 2015 please contact us through [email protected] See you in the trees:-)
  13. I wonder if our years of referral to the description as offered by the great seer of history have blinkered us to what takes place in front of our very eyes. Is wall 4 part of a compartmentalizing process, or is it maybe the tree growing into an immediate & available space, just as any other part of the very same organism is doing? We become lost in trying to define & redefine, labouring on differences of opinion in order to not cause offense, often. Sometimes we have invested so heavily in believing a story in history that we cannot bring ourselves to not believe, even in the face of obvious contrary evidence. Our allegiances are stronger than we care to consider. Only from a perspective of not knowing are we truly free to allow the light of nature to shine through.

    Work

We currently require the services of a climber/groundsman in need of regular work mostly in the area of pruning works. Would suit someone hoping to improve their abilities but able to carry out work to a good standard. PM please. Nod
  22. This is not my understanding of retrenchment as the upper canopy shows good vitality with no dieback & has not been affected by the removal of the lower branches & is not the result of the ageing process or root damage.
  23. Coal miners on strike-chap with saw cut off lowest limbs to warm his cockles by the fire? Not retrenchment in any way shape or form :-)
  24. Hey Mutley You quoted £700 for the job, what manpower, machinery & time do you think it would have taken to complete? Cheers Nod
  25. At last, music to my ears!
