    Agree - they make solid engineered equipment. The Kiln. You will be amazed how much timber you need to burn and at what rate to get the temperature up, especially in the early stages of drying. You are going to need that firebox at full tilt for some time to achieve anywhere near the drying times you wished for. Remember - dry fuel < 20% and condense the fuel. Some may have other views. Keep us posted.

    I think you will have to condense the fuel in order to achieve the output you require. Was the fuel product guidance that came with the boiler specifying specific fuel / specs. Dense fuel ever more crucial with small fireboxes and fan assisted combustion. Getting close to a chip boiler. If bugs me everytime I order a stack of milled timber when we could easily run a mill ourselves with the facilities we have. Their double edge bander look the works! Did you get to see it in op. when over there? What edger do you use at present?

    You could do with bundling up that slabwood into tight billets Jon. U could band up lengths then crosscut into 0.5m billets, then easy throw in. Those hourly fuelling visits are crazy - 2 hrs will be possible if you take my advice. Your fires are not intense enough - loose slabs, burn in a flash - get fuel condensed and watch temp. rise. More importantly - HOW GOES THE MILL ?

    That's interesting. So using this theory are you suggesting that a customer gets less weight in a m3 of 8" logs than a m3 of 12" logs? (I know we don't sell by weight, so perhaps I should say less volume of solid wood) I can see you have a solid understanding of timber volumes - would you be able to give percentages for 8", 10" and 12" logs? The small the logs the more labour etc. etc. is a given of course.

    How did you calculate?: "they'll be getting less solid volume for the same bulk volume" Comparing say 8" with 10". Thanks

    Get an experience Fencing Contractor and you will save yourself a lot of time / money and avoid asking questions on a Forum. I think if you started advising a decent Tree Surgeon how to do his/her job - they may possibly take offence!

    I would be looking to contact 2 or 3 Agricultural fencing businesses and ask to see their work. If you know little about fencing, take someone with you who does! Then get quotes from who you see as the most proficient. Professional fencing contractors usually have the best, most efficient gear and are the most competitive for those reasons. Fencing other than gentle curves has many pitfalls when constructing stock fencing e.g. uprating stake diameter to 5-6" top etc. etc. - otter fencing may be different (if only for otters) as you are not securing huge beasts. Good luck.

    Yes, mould not an issue as the whole objective is to dry the wood close to 20%. That's what a quality timber should always be as you know.

    Mould fortunately will not be a problem, as algae, litchens and fungi are generally temperature sensitive, in addition to the short drying cycle time - any existing organisms will simply dessicate

    Are you proposing to selling retail / wholesale or both? Cedar has always been one of my favourite softwoods - dries easily and burns beautifully.

    Ok, so wholesale dry soft, but retailers will want hard also. Have you got any firm offers of intent from any Retailers. How will you deliver? Serious retailers will want it containerised. Transport brings your margin right down. I tend to look at negatives 1st and never leave a stone unturned when it comes to 'knowing the market'. There are some big players on here but most buy hard from across the water or have their own setups. I've had enquiries but the transport kills it unless very local. I hope I am mis-informed in your case as you are regionally different.

    3.5 days min Jon as your insulated, but only 9 hrs burn time. Dry spruce faster of course, 2.5 - not greatest firewood and won't sell well. You will struggle i'm sorry to say unless you can offer hardwood in the mix.

    Yes, no night stoking. It will be producing around 175 nominal burning sub 20% MC fuel. Don't burn over 20% MC. They may come on at 33 but will cut out below that temp when the low limit signals switch. Does a fan act on the fuel heating the unit?

    564kg / 24 hrs. How many Kw? Are you drying 20m3 per cycle? Hardwood? The fan acting on the fuel is thermostatically controlled - yes? The outlet fan cycles on at 33c - what temp. c off ?

    How is the airflow fan controlled or is it un-controllable? What timber volume do you load each hour?

    This is more like it - some action at last. Very much looking forward to hearing how it performs once you have everything calibrated and fully bedded in, having run a few 1000 metres through it. - that is the time when all our questions will be answered. I hope it progresses well:001_smile:

    Sometime the dealership route is a wise choice - they will diagnose any issue you have with electrics faster then anyone. You can always go elsewhere and get the work done, but surely you are better off solving the issues there and then, wasting no more time and getting back to work. Other views will differ.

    Take it to an Iveco main dealer. It may cost to have them plug it in and diagnose but it could save you a fortune in the long run. They will give you a quoted price before they start. On a daily basis they deal with these issues - there is nowhere else to go IMO.

    If you don't mind Logsnstuff (sorry - don't know your name) i'll use that thought to educate the public on the merits of 'naturally dried wood'. This will be controversial for some, but I am working towards an improved place to live in for my children.

    We all need to work together to promote a softwood / hardwood mix. 100% Hardwood is just not sustainable - the tree species just won't produce the volumes demand requires. The RHI on domestic and commercial Bio-mass installations is making the whole matter worse - as has been said, they are all 'riding the wave'. 'Boom and bust' comes to mind, with the profiteers long gone others will be left to think up possible solutions. The average person has no interest in this of course.

    Some people never lose interest in the 'drying' debate - good to see you back. There can be a difference in 'force' dried firewood and 'naturally' dried firewood, however using the general UK method of 'force' drying firewood - there is no appreciable difference. 'Like for like' - I'm always using that phrase to the end user. Through media I am slowly educating the public in my region. We love others selling 'green' timber - not great for the consumer, but for us it is great Ooh - how many years has the current phase of Bio-mass RHI payments left to run ? 20 years soon passes.
