  1. We all need to work together to promote a softwood / hardwood mix. 100% Hardwood is just not sustainable - the tree species just won't produce the volumes demand requires. The RHI on domestic and commercial Bio-mass installations is making the whole matter worse - as has been said, they are all 'riding the wave'. 'Boom and bust' comes to mind, with the profiteers long gone others will be left to think up possible solutions. The average person has no interest in this of course.
  2. Some people never lose interest in the 'drying' debate - good to see you back. There can be a difference in 'force' dried firewood and 'naturally' dried firewood, however using the general UK method of 'force' drying firewood - there is no appreciable difference. 'Like for like' - I'm always using that phrase to the end user. Through media I am slowly educating the public in my region. We love others selling 'green' timber - not great for the consumer, but for us it is great Ooh - how many years has the current phase of Bio-mass RHI payments left to run ? 20 years soon passes.
  3. No, I don't recieve RHI, but we can all understand why the financial incentives encouraged many to sign up when the Tariff level was at 8.8p / KwH
  4. The main reasons for drying firewood by people who sell quantity is they cannot afford to buy 250 m3 of timber x months ahead of the date of sale and store / handle it. If you are earning income via RHI payments to dry the Firewood it makes business sense. Maybe not so daft Steve if you consider these 2 factors.
  5. I am relieved someone finally someone said that :001_smile:
  6. This has been discussed previously. Excessively dry wood does loose certain volatiles contained within the wood tissue and a larger proportion of the remaining volatile components typically escape with the flue gases largely unburnt.
  7. I read an editorial just this week, that claimed exactly that and was also running down air dried Firewood. Where I see a case like this, I intend to put the record straight with a piece based on quantified facts and not opinions.
  8. For those not recieving Government funding in the form of RHI payments to dry their firewood, it may tempting for some to draw to the attention of the public that the vast majority of kiln dried firewood sold in the UK is imported from abroad or funded by the taxpayer. It is never wise to name names though - that's just un-professional.
  9. I am not advocating kiln drying to receive the RHI payments - but as has been discussed many times before on the Forum, drying give the flexibility to react to demand and avoids the capital tied up in stock.
  10. With an isolated heat exchanger Jon and those temperatures you will have no issues. Lets have an update on your Poland thread ! - i'm a bit bored
  11. You're there Jon and we sensible enough to do at a fraction of the cost of most. Potato boxes ok for now, but you will need to move some slats to improve airflow. Good luck.
  12. Work for a few Tree Surgeons and Forestry Contractors for 5 years or so (ideally 10) - that should give you an idea of the world of work and the very basics of running your own business (successfully) Good luck.
  13. Yes agreed, I was thinking of adding in but it goes without saying. Everyone will have there own level of acceptable risk, I just prefer taking risks that I am 100% in control of and look for excitement in other areas. I hope your investments work for you and give a good return.
  14. The challenge of developing a business is what drives me, as with many who strive to succeed. I see milling as another string to my bow, as it sits nicely within our current activities and further utilises the assets and labour availability already in place here. Just jump in your Merc. Jon and keep heading South. Stop when you reach the pot of Gold -we're there. I'll keep in touch about your latest Kiln - just PM me when time allows. Like others on the Forum, I'm greatly looking forward to seeing the Videos and hearing if the TM is all you thought it would be. Ooh and thanks again for all your valued advice, feedback, mentoring etc
  15. 'A little knowledge is dangerous' as is said. It's hard enough making a margin at what you do 'day in day out' even after years of experience, so risking that hard earned cash on something we all know next to nothing about - That's just insane. Put that pot of cash into improving your business efficiency, now that is a worthwhile investment.
  16. As usual Jon - sound advice. I have assets to liquidate, which will take me into the dry weather of 2016. However owning the hardware outright takes the pressure right off, which makes life so much easier. Lead time for milling in my area is 2-3 weeks, at all the limited number of mills that exist locally. Demand seems steady and we get a decent quantity of saw-logs delivered with our roundwood, which will be a good starting point. Just need to fathom out how to address training the staff. Maybe just remunarate you substantially, to take a bus-man's holiday to this glorious part of England.
  17. Ah, sounds promising. Appears that there are plenty of Diesel 3 phase around 25-30 kva around 5k - so that's ideal. So looking like genset 5K +vat Mill 15K +vat Carriage to uk and in UK to me? Import duty etc ? Installation 2K What is carriage likely to be on your mill? Do these figures appear consistent with reality ? Thanks
  18. So its a phase converter or nothing. Do you know the total Kw requirement for the 600 and yours? 3rd option - used diesel generator. As you know they are available if tricky to source.
  19. Like they say J - you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. I am in the very unfortunate position that I only have 1 phase. >1000 metres to a 3 phase location. Digital converter, Diesel - what are your thoughts?
  20. Softwood needs to ideally be sub 20%, as with the best will in the world we don't always run the fire / woodburner at full tilt
  21. You always manage to come up with these little gems Jon I was in awe of Video 1 - I am part way there, as I already have the billhook. Just need to replace the bundler man with mechanics. Video 2 - Well that was just hilarious. Oversize, well I'm sticking with pto splitter and cheap labour for now - upgrade to a pto pump in the new year. Looking at milling the oversize by 2017. Hope things are as good as they can be with you - keep on the radar.
