  1. Ditch the checkatrade and find another local mag.. You should have an extra £3-£4k in work and £600 in your pocket.. Checkatrade sound like poor value.. It really annoys me when folk selling advertising tell me "£500 is only one job.". or "you only need a few jobs for it to pay for itself..." I really hate advertising. Run by crooks, I have been at the end of more then a few scams... Even the legitimate companies have no real idea if it's good value or a waste of time. Its an endless black hole, especially the internet stuff where folk take your money, promise to do amazing things and then often do nothing... IME..
  2. My buffalo jacket is 25 years old. Way to warm for climbing... To be honest I never got on with the get wet, but stay warm business.. I tried it a few times but unless running I am always going to reach for a goretex shell in more then a light shower..
  3. Why no extra charge? Eco plugs are 70p each. a big tree could cost you £15 in plugs alone..
  4. I have a clogged up EGR valve on my Hyundai, it is a pointless part. That is going to cost £1000 to fix.. My old school mechanic has locked it open and tricked the ECU into thinking limp mode is full power and it drives fine.. But the engine light is now always on so have to go to a main dealer to replace it. They require a diagnostics check £100 to tell me it is the EGR valve...
  5. People always seem to inflate wages on here.. It might well be twice that of an arb but not an easy £60-80K https://www.totaljobs.com/salary-checker/average-bricklayer-salary
  6. Still looking, permanent position available.. Holiday, pension, great team..
  7. You have to drive them to the cash point... As sarcasm doesn't always come across online can I just state..... I don't like being paid cash it costs more to pay into the bank..
  8. Page 55 of the safety at street works.. ... Where a positive traffic control method is chosen, notification must be given to the relevant highway authority. For the use of portable traffic signals, prior permission is required from the relevant highway authority. However, in the case of immediate works (as defined in the Code of Practice for the Co-ordination of Street Works and Works for Road Purposes and Related Matters), the authority must be informed at the time and an application submitted at the earliest opportunity (but not later than 10 am the next working day).
  9. 5837 surveys are almost always unsatisfying work.. The client/builder doesn't want it, they normally have the design sorted before hand, and the council are not interested in your opinion, unless it is the same as theirs.. If they don't like the proposals or the developer they think the crappy leylandii is an A tree..
  10. So are you suggesting basically any works that you do that are on any road should be notified? As they all impact traffic flow.. So the standard give and take road narrowing etc..?
  11. This is not mentioned in, the red book..? https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/321056/safety-at-streetworks.pdf
  12. Skyhuck, stop paying tax, insurance, waste disposal, advertising, maintenance and all that extra stuff take cash in hand, drive your clients to the cash point for the cash, soon you too will be on £90k...
  13. I agree, if it is a single tree out side of the RPA then £800 would be on the steep side. But in my experience there are nearly always other trees that might be affected and therefore need to be surveyed. We have no idea in reality what the site looks like. I have never had a "simple" AIA's with only one tree that is out side the RPA and not affected. As to not needing fancy courses.. Barrell, Dowson and the like are doing there best to push arb consultancy into the realm of other professional consultancies, this includes remuneration. It is not about making things sound more complicated. Unfortunately much of what we do is an afterthought that is completely ignored anyway.
  14. You can never have been to training with Jeremy Barrell or Dave Dowson... Don't undersell your skills and services..
  15. When are permits to work on the highways required? Where can you find out, if one is required? We have chapter 8 training and signage and I am sure it was covered on the training but I can't remember and the documents relating to roadworks are ... extensive....

    chipper

They are a good chipper, TS or tunnisson rebranded I believe. Fletcher Stewart used to be dealer. Try Danequip.
  17. Just having a few numbers to call and try is great.
  18. George Moore gcktreeworks put together a list of sites for arbac members a few years ago.. But a searchable site would be very useful.
  19. Yes, several of those would be perfect.. Can I get addresses...?
  20. The AMS might be simple, but it sounds like an AIA would still need to be completed first and trees measured and plotted so the £800 doesn't sound to bad
  21. Is there anyone in Corby Northamptonshire who will take chip or logs? I have a couple of lime trees to fell. I don't normally like going so far but it is for a regular (if slow paying) client. Thanks,
  22. We have just won a large contract and require 2 experienced climbers full time.
