  1. One issue I keep finding with the more mature life style change employees, especially the ones with something about them, is that they often plan to set up on their own. (I was the same). But as an employer you don't want to invest in them as they just end up leaving and setting up as competition... Having your tickets does make it lower risk for an employer.
  2. How valid is taking a picus at that height? The fungal bracket is significantly lower.
  3. I have not seen the tree? It is road side, I don't believe it has been reduced.
  4. Comments please. Rigidoporous on Norway maple
  5. Same Romanian is coming back for our other tired 2005 Iveco. We have not bothered servicing, MOTing or even removing logos, it's nice and easy and I believe we can charge nil VAT as it is going to export. Not sure I would fancy the job driving them the 1600 miles across Europe. My Mitzy pinin was rusting away and that went East a few years ago also with all the signwriting. I imagine a fleet of old canopy vehicles driving around Romania..
  6. Anyone else sold an old truck recently... There seems to be a big demand for vehicles that are at the end of their life being exported. I had calls within hrs of posting one of our old Iveco's up for sale, with several people willing to pick it up tomorrow with cash.. Do they just have mechanics in eastern europe who can make trucks last longer as they get to a point here where it is not economically viable to keep them on the road..
  7. We are taking a big red oak down in duffield next week, anywhere local to tip? (I have checked the tip directory)
  8. If the council are making cuts at least try and get some redundancy pay and or all the training you can. The council will have to find you suitable work. Compared to most of us self employed types at least you still have a job that will pay you a wage.. My hands started giving me issues 6 or 7 years ago and it was pretty scary as when you are self employed tree surgeon your transferable skills are limited.. I had an exit plan to move over to consultancy and running the business and it has all worked to plan really. I haven't picked up a saw in 4 or 5 years and climbing kit well out of loler.. My new role is boring and frustrating with very little job satisfaction. I am busier then ever, but my fingers only go numb on long bike rides..
  9. Deffinatly wrong and illegal Race discrimination when providing goods, facilities and services It is illegal for anyone providing goods, facilities or services in the UK to discriminate because of race. Someone providing goods, facilities or services must not: refuse to provide you with goods, facilities or services because of your race provide any of these things on less favourable terms or conditions because of your race It is illegal to discriminate regardless of how the goods and services are provided or whether you have to pay for them or not.
  10. Pretty sure that is illegal. And wrong..
  11. We use Google drive to share files and diarys. If you use google docs and google sheets you can collaborate on documents .
  12. This client is is a big organisation obvoiusly trying to look green. If we get paid and plant some trees then everyone is a winner..
  13. Does using the expensive diesel make a difference? My huyandai i800 needed a new and expensive dpf at around 80k. I started putting in expensive diesel every few tanks. It will go months only doing short trips ferrying kids about ..
  14. While I know they are not the most suitable trucks (we have two 7.5 tonners already)they are still the backbone of our industry, youngsters can drive them without expensive training and great for domestic arb. I have three 3.5 tonners at the the end of their sule. I want to get rid of 2, keep the best for occasional back up but get a half decent replacement.. Our isuzu grafter has been great and is top of my list as a replacement. I like the Mitsubishi canter assume it is like the grafter Would like a toyota dyna as I rate toyota but they are rare What about the Nissan cabstar? I think it's a Renault which puts me off Had 2 transits and they were average Have 2 ivecos daily and never been impressed with 3.5 ton ones. We have a lr130 and while it has its place and will keep for ever don't want another... Ldv, VW not considered Mercedes expensive relative to others.. All the pickups are too small. Needs to be able to tow 2.5 tons Looking to spend £12 to £15+vat.. Thoughts please.
  15. Canopy Tree Services are still trying people. 01332 875 869

I got a bike seat and some cycling gear. It was cheap..clothes were too small.
  17. Are these self employed day rates or paye employee rates?
  18. Many tree firms have and do use (including me) freelancers/subbies who should really be employees. I do not know if anyone has come to grief but the potential repercussions could be very costly if done over years..
  19. I am more likely to believe a BBC programme that has researchers and are looking at the real numbers than hearsay from a few self employed blokes down the pub. I agree tree works is at the low end but maybe not as low as some suggest..
  20. The point is the HMRC will think he is employed, there used to be a form on the HMRC web site, where you answered questions and it said if you were employed or an employee. I can't find it.. Am I employed, self-employed, both, or neither? WWW.LITRG.ORG.UK Whether you are employed, self-employed, both or neither will make a difference to the amount of tax and National Insurance contributions (NIC) you have to pay, as well as how you pay...
  21. While I agree it is difficult to find decent staff other trades are NOT getting double the money. Radio 4 More or less made some interesting points. Go to about 12 mins in. A quick summary is lots of these so called "average wages" are rubbish and worked out from a day-rate of self employed contractors assumed to be working 6 days a week. According to the ONS Employed rates are as follows: Brickies are on £25k a year so £99.20 a day. Plumbers £30K a year £119 a day. Roofers £24K a year or £95.23 a day Electricians 31K a year or £123 a day As a comparison Nurses start at £21K or £83 a day. and graduate with £54K worth of Debt.. BBC Radio 4 - More or Less: Behind the Stats, Dementia, inflation and shark deaths WWW.BBC.CO.UK Health risks for Presidential hopefuls, falling inflation, shark deaths and salary claims
  22. We have been over the legitimate freelance/subbie vs employee many times on here. In my opinion if he is already working 2 regular days under your supervision the HMRC would probably already class him as an employee and you should be paying him holiday, pension, national insurance etc.. I believe you coul also be persued for non payment of tax if he is not paying it. Having him as an employee on the books even if it is part time is what hmrc want and might save you grief in the future. You can write all sorts of things into contracts but whether an employment tribunal would think they are reasonable if push came to shove is debatable.
  23. I am no expert but £4 to 6k sounds like quite a lot of hired in machine when needed or an old nail to buy..
  24. Burnett Crane Hire might go to Burton Phone: 0115 939 1788 The crane will be old.... But Peter knows his stuff and he is good value.
