  1. There is or was a forst problems Facebook user group. I can't find it now but it popped up in my feed.
  2. I now ask the client for a budget then provide options for planting. Too many times I have wasted time pricing up a planting jobs to the clients spec, only for it to be way more then they are willng to pay.
  3. It can be difficult raising rates but you need to every year.. One of the reasons general rates for tree surgery is so low in my opinion is that oldtimers (myself included) don't regularly raise their rates. I need a minimum £550+ VAT for 2 men and small chipper and £660+ VAT for 3 men. Mog and 10 inch chipper should be significantly more. You will lose regulars when you ramp up prices. But is it really worth working for nothing..
  4. My preferred option would be 2-3 years old and Japanese. The major depreciation is done and they are still reliable. With leased vehicles becoming popular, you can get a tidy vehicle that has been regularly maintained as part of the lease. Unfortunately the UK market lacks most of the small mazda, honda and toyota vans ..
  5. I understand wanting to have fixed costs.. but that is £17,640 over the 3 years. A 3 year old belingo should sell for around £5,500. £4,000 a year is a lot to spend on having a new "reliable" berlingo.
  6. Not sure if the link will work. It was posted on UK's Tree Surgeons Facebook https://www.facebook.com/brady.viger/videos/2593500190705363/UzpfSTYyNjkxMjg0MzpWSzoxMjQ5MDk0MjU1MzAwNDc2/
  7. When trekking in new zealand I used to carry a rescue kit a few slings and some 6mm rope (I still use some to hold up the clothes dryer). I can't remember what it was but was strong enough to abseil off. You would need a suitable friction device.. if you tied it off you could use it like srt so would only need half the length then if used ddrt. Someone who still climbs try it and see if it could work..
  8. I admit I have not climbed in years and I think the whole 2 line thing sucks.. but trying to come up with a workable solution.. I get in some trees it's fine and often used to climb big trees with 2 ends or 2 ropes.. But can't see it working 90 percent of the time. Could the second line be used a bit like another side strop. You could keep the tail in a rope bag clipped to your harness and just use it to ensure your always tied in at least twice. This emergency line could potentially be much smaller diameter.. It sounds like a ball ache but might be less if a tangle fest..
  9. Probably be the best thing to do for the wildlife..
  10. Since when has that been the "official line." Maybe in the 90's..
  11. A little bit over the top for most domestic work..
  12. Do these big specialist machines normally go out on a day rate? Or do owner operators get their own work. If you work out your numbers and can reliably fill your books on a day rate it sounds like a relatively low stress way if working. Probaby less stress than running a large crew with multiple machines to maintain and multiple customers to keep happy. What are the running/maintenance costs like?
  13. I am now here! What can I tell you? Pics and videos of it in action..

  17. I would find that very confusing.. It's bad enough having the indicator and wiper stalks on the wrong side, like I do in our Hyundai. I nearly always pick the wrong side.... whatever I am driving...
  18. Rebranded tunnissen/TS Industrie. A kwikchip is going to be getting on in years. The 222 was pretty comparable to a TW190 back in the day.
  19. Anyone know any thing about this setup? Is anyone at Blue Sky Tree Care on here?

For use with the HT-KM and HL-KM KombiTools. We have been having lots of issues with these recently, they are constantly breaking.. They used to do a 1m ali one that was more robust.. But that now only comes in a 0.5m Is there anything better for trimming those high hedges... The Kombi engines are fine.. Do other makes fit the stihl Kombi?
  22. Maybe that was the reason
  23. I don't really get the contract lift vs hire with trained operator. I have discussed on here previously.. We use and guy who has been using cranes for decades, his cranes are old but he knows his stuff, is good to work with and the lifts are planned between the climber and the crane operator... He does not differentiate. If I hire a crane and trained operator, they are surely going to be responsible for the crane and lift. What is different on the ground when you get a contract lift? It just sounds like a way to add a couple of hundred quid on the hire rate. With a contract lift does the "appointed person" tell the climber where to sling and cut? If I did a hire only and told the trained crane operator to lift something too big, surely the trained crane operator is still going to be responsible if it goes pear shaped. If you compare it to hiring a wagon to take away waste. I could potentially overload it, but it is going to be the driver who gets in grief if it is overloaded.
  24. I recently got 10 used half size 2.4m x 0.6m x 12mm ‐ 17kg ones for £35 each MultiMatts Ltd 181 Samuel Jones Crescent, Little Paxton, St Neots Cambs PE19 6QZ Tel: 0800 6226838 E-mail: [email protected] www.multimatts.co.uk
  25. If I could justify one, I would buy in an instant. I imported a mazda bongo from Japan and it was 15 years old but still mint. I have wanted a 70 series for decades.. Every few years I check various web sites in different countries and contemplate importing one. But I don't need one..
