  1. We usually have around 300 ish competitors so the odds are fairly good, as Pete found out last year when he won a load of stretch air kit. And the plus side is you don't even have to buy a ticket to enter! Good luck guys Nick
  2. Tom & Brownie, Great advice guys anything that can help save a climber has to be a good thing.
  3. Just put my advert together for the Forestry Journal 52 new jobs in at the moment so if you are looking for work please use the Arbtalk links and pop in to http://www.arbjobs.com Whilst your their try and win the £350 worth of Arb gear Sorbus are offering as a prize in our on line comp! TTFN Nick
  4. The Tree Austria 1&2 both have an attachable /removable seat pannel for those times when you are sitting and quickly un clip when you want a standard harness. If you like the TreeFlex, Dragonfly or Butterfly look for the Skylotec "Kolibri" with sliding bridge wide weight spreading back support sliding leg loops with wide pads, side D's and loads of tool loops. I wish harnesses like this were around when I was climbing as my back is nackered.
  5. Borrow someone elses it works just as well!
  6. Horrendous to hear of any climber loosing their life. I hope you guys don't mind me suggesting something that might help in an instance like this, during an aerial rescue it can be difficult to get anyone out of the tree this is especially hard when the climber is using a steel core strop and Karibiners as if unconceous his weight makes it hard to release the kit. A new 22KN CE marked "cut away" strop is now available to place between your cam device and your belt Karibiner. If a rescue is ever needed rescuers can quickly cut this through allowing you to be carefully lowered to the ground. If you think this is a good idea ask at your local supplier or come back to me and I will put you on to someone who can get them for you. Climb clever, climb safe guys. Nick
  7. As always we have loads of companies looking for staff so if you are looking for an arboricultural position please have a look at what available at http://www.arbjobs.com NOTE we are not an agency! Applying for a position through Arbjobs is free. Agencies charge the employer 10-20% of your salary, Arbjobs charges as little as just £50 per advert.
  8. Don't know if any of you guys are interested just had a new job loaded for South Oxfordshire DC they are looking for a Tree Officer deadline for applications early March so get on line and have a look http://www.arbjobs.com As always loads of other positions available too.
  9. If you go through any employment agency they will charge your employer between 5-20% of your first years salary as a "finders fee". Arbjobs is not an agency and employers only pay for their advert on the site. Applicants can then contact the employer directly from the website, easy! Given the choice of two climbers of level ability, one direct (no fee) application from Arbjobs and one from an agency with a potential 5-20% fee who do you think an employer will take on ? I am of course a little bias but you get the idea. Good luck.
  10. We have just had two new jobs posted over the pond one with the New York parks department and one with a contractor in Alaska. If you are interested visit http://www.arbjobs.com Good luck Nick
  11. The item in question was a climbing lanyard that I was using as a saw lanyard, apparently something that is safe to carry your weight is not safe enough to carry an MS200T. Marc I heard it wasn't the fact that you were using the climbing lanyard for your saw, it was that you were using the saw lanyard for climbing!!
  12. We have recently had to use the new on line small claims system, it was quite easy. You can also log back in and track proceedings despite contacting the company a lot of times when they got a small claims summonds they paid immediately. It wasn't a lot of money but as you said earlier its the principal of the thing. Another idea would be to arrive at debtors house with a truck full of chip and explaining that unless they pay, you will have to return their tree. Tipping the chip right behind their car & blocking the drive. This would probably work best on a monday morning just as they are due to leave for work!
  13. The winner of the http://www.arbjobs.com Sept / Oct competition was Arborist Mr Graeme Edwards of North Wales. His new TreeMotion was dontated by the competition sponsors and equipment suppliers http://www.treecareireland.com Enter our latest Xmas competition sponsored by Fletcher Stewart at http://www.arbjobs.com with over £500 worth of Arb equipment up for grabs it got to be worth a few minuites of your time, good luck!
  14. Been a member of both organisations and both have merits. Unfortunately both are membership based organisations it is not in their interest to police their members as this may result in loss of members and fees. As Ed said earlier what is needed would be an independant UK trade association as per Corgi recognised and promoted by the goverment as a trade standard , I don't believe either ISA or AA schemes are recognised in such a way at this time.
  15. Jesus guys I was charging £350 for two guys ten years ago.
  16. Good point but my guys were pretty good and rarely broke anything, did manage to run over the blower once but hey S**t happens now and again.
  17. Someone was talking about Gorilla planting the other year I don't know that much came of it but the idea was to pop out at night and plant loads of whips on any spare land traffic islands wide verges etc. This would have to be funded out of your own pocket but if youve got a few trees spare it could be worth it to enhance an area. Any possible press coverage of this illegal act would raise the awareness of the need to plant more trees.
  18. Not that I have ever done it but have you seen how easy it is to disconnect - reconnect a BT phone line? Of course I wouldn't recommend anyone to tamper with BT hardware! I didn't used to charge my guys for breakages but even a £10 fence pannel ends up a £100 bill once you time in the collection, replacement and disposal of broken one or lets put it another way, two days profit !
  19. I suppose you have special goggles for drinking Sambuca too!! mmmm give me an idea..... ISA comp 2008 preliminary event 6, best hosted at the end of night "Who can drink the most sambuca and still stand up!" how many points should you get for that?
  20. Have any of you guys thought about using the good old beach windbreaks? Cheap as chips easy to carry and instal tough enough to catch the chip and brighten up even the dullest of days. Ebay had loads for sale in the short british summer.
  21. Sorenson you must look such a cool Fu£Fer in those goggles did you get the camo yank helmet to match?
  22. Only "near miss" I ever had was snedding of some side limbs on the deck after a take down. I caught the saw on a stub and it kicked up in to the back of my left boot, I know I know "What was your boot doing there?" I was tired and maybe not thinking straight and the site was a mess hence the funny stance because the groundies hadn't cleared this limb yet. Anyway blade rode up the back of my boot lifting my trouser leg before it hit my calf.... Luckily those lovely little kevlar strands in the rear padding had done their job, when I felt brave enough to look all I had was a little mark on my leg just above the boot cuff...nuff said! it can happen to any of us. Anyway for a lot of arb work you should ditch the chainsaw trousers and use a pull saw !! You get a much better job if you have to justify the effort before you make it.....
  23. http://www.arbjobs.com has a huge trade directory linking to arboricultural and forestry companies including equipment suppliers, training providers, colleges, "Forums", chipper & stump grinder sales. We don't only list those who pay us and have tried to include every service in the UK so its a big list! If you supply a service to the industry and are not included please contact me to be added.
  24. I couldn't agree with you more on several levels ! Running a website myself I'd have to agree !! Internet advertising that hyperlinks to your (well built)website gives potential customers instant access to so much more information about your services or product's than an advert in any publication. However compared to the 30 odd pages in a trade publication the internet is huge and you need to select very carefully where you advertise .....(my rates are quite competative)
