  1. The treelife courses are well worth it. Even if it's just for the practice funghi / tree / pest etc idents. Good luck
  2. All the way to the moon, or the top of the tree which ever comes first!. You start getting in to issues around causing terminal decline of the tree and this being considered damage (in the legal sense). Lots of things for lawyers to get paid to talk about, no doubt.
  3. This guy is a mine of info and makes up / tests the cable himself. The website is pants so a call and the ladies in the office will sort, might be worth talking to Bill about the in's/out's of cable / termination etc.
  4. I've just had a look, only on for 1 more day though.
  5. Done, a small ask, considering the recipients.
  6. Send them the photo with addy and date, TPO No if you have it. I doubt they'll do anything but they may and you will show which side you're on
  7. I'm with JP on this one, lots of small branch ends, but nowt big. The storms in '05 probably cleared out most of ours.
  8. Yep, I'd be more than miffed, especially as you left it in saleable lengths. I'm no lawyer, but you cut it as part of a contract, that makes it yours. Have you enquired around hauliers etc, 7m lengths take some shifting, or had they been cut on site?
  9. Richard, What's the other side of the hedge?. I presume that if it failed at the base it would / could take out the lines but miss the oil tank. I know of a couple of guys in Cumbria that could do decay testing but don't know what they cost (1 resistograph - Capita, Penrith, 1 resistograph & Picus - Bruce Hatton, Broughton-in-Furness). Conkers might have had dealings with Bruce as he's in the same area. In your shoes I'd look at a possible reduction to stabilise if possible and get another planted, but I'm only going off the photos. Good luck:icon14:
  10. A mate of mine got into rope access about a year ago. He's level 2 now and making good money on land based work. He stayed away from the rigs as he didn't have a trade / other qualification. If he had gone on the rigs he would've been chipping rust with a needle gun or painting, 2 weeks of that in the north sea, no thanks. If you want to make really good money on the rigs, get a qual in non destructive testing. These guys test the structure of the rig with ultra sound kits, and tend to only work summer contracts, cos thats all they have to.
  11. Fish and chips delivered and some Hawkshead Gold, tonights treat ahead of a long day tomorrow.
  12. I don't mean to pry, but I was thinking of going for a Kingcab (2 fold away seats?) as my kids are hardly ever in the truck. Got a double cab Isuzu at the mo and the full seat in the back just gets filthy with the wet/dirty kit going in. Why you going for a double cab instead of a King cab? If it's for a reason you don't want to disclose, just tell me to mind my own business, there'll be no offence taken.
  13. Is this what you mean? http://cheshirecontracting.com/Cheshire%20Contracting%20V12.html If so, why they good (my Isuzu is on the way out so looking myself)?

    AA @ Ciren

and haven't saved enough money to go shopping yet so APF it is this year.
  15. Good luck, hope you enjoyed the show.
  16. Can ditto the down side of Lymes disease. Mate of mine (fell runner, climber, outdoor instuctor etc) picked up a tick on the isle of Rum. Got the halo round the bite, ended up in hospital with assorted tubes and drips. He made it through but is on the permanent sick now as he can just about walk 200m to the shops and thats him for the day. Just check them, pull them and watch for the halo round the bite.
  17. This should cover what you want to know - if it's not too late. http://www.woodland-trust.org.uk/campaigns/briefingsmore/ancientwoods.html
  18. Bin hot and dry for weeks here, getting to the point of grass crisping up and going dusty. Given a choice some overnight rain would be good, save me having to do the watering every other night:thumbdown:
  19. renewablejohn, Looked at pellet/chip boilers when I put ours in. Decent chip was sketchy (better now) and pellets a farce round mine. I also wanted to use my own wood. There are some cracking wood fired boilers about (the continentals have had it sorted for years!) and, as you say, if you've got the space for the fuel store you can have the user friendly features, self start/shut down etc. Still don't know of a "wood burning stove" that will do all that. Do they exist?
  20. Stick some weights on hands and wrists (I believe they come in fetching pink neoprene to match the wifes leotard & leg warmers). Then anything you do during the day is all exercise+. If you want a manly version, variations on divers belts, wrist / ankle bands can be made if you can afford the lead.
  21. David, just got my 3rd, wood is free, the time etc to sort it is not. They work well as room heaters, if they're put in right. They can heat the whole house and your water with a little effort. Downside is they can't be set to come on 1/2 hr before you get up or come home. If in doubt get a one with a bigger grate (= less work in wood prep) and you can always have a small fire in a big grate!
  22. David, Copol (high coppice / low pollard I take it?) If so why so high, deer problems? Sounds good if you're getting a good response, I've seen some drawn up horrors recently (under closed canopy).
  23. Chris , Where did you hire it from? I've just finished an expensive bit of extraction that a rig like that would have been better (and even possibly cheaper!!) for.
  24. (1)You can get round the height = lever issue by running the line via pulleys (imagine pulleys at the top of the towers in the image below - yes, I know its a bridge!) The line is secured to ground anchors at either end, the up slope at the lower end acts as a brake for the flying person. (2)Yep, done that, and to add insult to injury they slammed the doors on his feet in an attempt to get the ambulance away quickly!. (3)Dean, I can reserve you the first test spot if it goes ahead - you'll just have to carry 4 bags of sand (in the interests of science you understand:001_tongue:).
