  1. on my climbing ticket we did very little pole climbing, one short belayed climb. my first day spiking i was pooing bricks. lucky i got used to it as i do a ton of demo climbs. once you get used to them you'll wish you could spike every tree Jamie
  2. Alpha plus used to do some stuff, but they wouldn'tdo anything out of the ordinary like cut a length of prussic cord, it was the whole reel or nothing. What are you after? there are a few folks on here from teh edinburgh area who may be able to advise / let you play around with stuff Jamie
  3. sorry typo jamie
  4. yesterday we were finshing off the tree, just about to have a late lunch (starting at 2:thumbdown:) the boss and collegue were shipping kit over the road. on their second trip back someone had jumped into the cab and got two phones from the cab. we gave chase but funnily enough my harnes and spikes slowed me down. luckily the gay got away otherwise i'd be up on a heavy charge. it's not the phone and it's value that gets to me, its the contact list, the pictures and the inconvienience that ****** has caused. apparently the same guy did a car the day before in the same spot. Jamie
  5. you can splice old rope, just takes more time and more elbow grease.... a dab of KY and away you go. As we all know a bit of KY massage helps everything come along nicely:lol: Jamie
  6. I had to comprimise a few years ago. i got a spesh rockhopper, its done me well as a commuter, a tourer and a mountainbike and maybe even a half arsed road bike. it's all getting a bit long in the tooth now. the year a cycled to work and back and went my cycle tour i did well over 7000 miles on it. It may be a mountainbike but it spends most of it's life with 2 pannier racks, full length mudguards and some slicks (well schwalbe marathons as my street is too glass ridden for the conti gatorskins) oh that was at the top of the Belach na Ba in Applecross Jamie
  7. Thats an unusal mistake to make. my interpretation of your above post reads. maybe closed was the wrong word, the right word was "open". I'm confused:confused1: Jamie
  8. I wouldn't say my mind is closed, but then i would say that:001_tongue: I never read too much of his works. My general take on it is that everything is one huge self powered system. Energy is channelled from one source to the next and everything in the gaiasystem(, not sure if thats a word or concept) is dependent on the presence of all other systems working. The natural system works because all the gears are there and turning. My problem is that every question asked produces another vague question. to me a question has to produce a definate answer, even if it's another question. I've got a mate who i'm sure is well into this line of thought and we could spend weeks discussing the specific colour of a leaf. Jamie
  9. Sooo, from what i've sat and read through over 11 pages and 104 posts is that, everything is interlinked and inter dependent on each other. nothing is ever created the building blocks are all simply recycled, everything has an equal place and there is no climax community / species? is that about it? that's my take on it. evolution is a stumbling mixing pot where the succesful adaptations and mutations survive (apart from the fat, useless and stupid, unless they're human). Jamie
  10. oh and don't let your frapping turns twist on teh whipping....unless it's intentional. Jamie
  11. looks good stuart, nice attention to detail. get that whipping up alongside the eye though, a bit of perserverance, a sailmakers palm and some decent sail making needles and you'll get it Jamie
  12. Samson recommend eye eye slings with standard buries shold be 5 fid lengths (110x rope diameter, ten mm rope should be 1.1m long eye to eye) I use a blaskes on my short length of line with a spliced eye in silver streak. Jamie
  13. nice idea, not a huge fan of the dyneema sling as a prussic though Jamie

    S.r.t?

It's ok lads, just send the cheques to..... i made a small chest harness from 1" webbing for the croll instead of the wee bungee bit it works better but is a bit uncomfy. i think for the ultimate in SRTing you'd need the Petzl Sequioa SRT
  15. 020d my hand a few years ago. cutting left handed on my right hand side while holding a peg. the saw got stuck in teh cut so i backed it off and blipped the throttle. I'm assuming the right hand cutters caught the edge of teh cut and pulled the saw out and along the limb and 'tickled' over my hand. 12 weeks off work and it still sometimes hurts 4 years on. My girlfriend always shouts at me when i slate other peoples safety and pick people up. there is nothing quite like seeing a scar across the back of your hand to remind you of the consequences of short cuts, complacancy fatigue and not thinking safety first. oh and my insurance companies never paid out because 'it wasn't serious enough'. Jamie
  16. We did a volue count on your logs we worked it out to 1cube on timber produces 1.72cube of firewood. we store it in 3 cube baskets and worked out in that 40% of the volume is air. Jamie

    S.r.t?

get up the rope (low and slow at first), chuck your line over your left leg pull up on your top ascender then push the catch on your croll down and and slowly and under control lower yourself a bitbring your hand ascender down then repeat. don't go down to far as your hand ascender will go tight. you chuck the line over your left leg to stop the teeth grabbing the rope when you don't want them too. oh and be very careful. start slow and low and don't do anything you're not sure about. if in doubt get training. Jamie

Big tip for ya all, learn to down climb those ascenders, it makes it easier at the top at your change over Jamie

    S.r.t?

Instead of using your 020, coil the excess rope and hang it just off the ground that keeps the weight on it. Jamie
  21. i've never tried but i wouldn't bother.... it's a pretty hard fibre that splills out when cut. It's NOT 16 strand Jamie
  22. get it, they're great. they can be a bit of a git to get back but they're well worth it. Rob, i hope you've taken that paper tag off Jamie

    Tough days

I read the book life and Limb by Jamie Andrews last year, I'd recommend it to everyone. Life is tough enough with two hands and feet, climbing hills, rock climbing and ice climbing with all 4 limbs is hard work. Now think about doing it minus the hands and feet. anyway check out his videos Videos - Jamie Andrew .com Jamie
  24. looks good, thats a lotta splicing Jamie
  25. would 2 9mm tenex eyes fit through it? Jamie
