  9. I've got teh collins, both the hard and paper backed versons. go for the hard backed, its a few quid more but it has more species in it. there are other tree ID book, try treesource.co.uk Jamie
  10. think dozer blade Jamie
  11. Cleetus i'd say i'm in the same position, just maybe not as commercial yet. I've got boxes of splices that i made a mess of. Most have been kept as reference to what not to do. Like you, most of my tricks have been self taught with info some gleamed from others and books. I'm not sure if a 2 day course is the way forward, as with everything on here a course is only the start of the training. it takes a lot of cock ups to become fluid, but then thats me being self taught and reading and asking a lot. Jamie
  12. we have a PTO winch, in 540 its nice. Off the top of my head i can't remember what it is, German thats all i know. well worth it. if you can try and get a butt plate as well. turns the front end of teh mog into a small skidder. and a chipper behind Jamie
  13. I'm sure if a group of people got together who know their stuff they could create a syllabus. Load testing, for my non standard splices i test a few and work out an Average break strength. I follow the same instructions each time so each splice should be as close to identical as possible. same measurements every time. periodic re-testing to ensure standards. I keep records of all my splices. i have rakes of different instructions by different manufaturers / authors / rope gurus. measurements vary slightly but all teh instructions are the same. How do the big names in arb suppliers feel about certification is it something they are happy to push? I'm sure they have ways of pleasing their insurance companies that everything is above board and competent. Their voice is the voice thats missing here. I'm small time as are i'm sure others in this thread. Jamie
  14. Getting ropes load tested is a sure fire way of determining if the splice construction is capable of supporting the load. Proving competancy is like said easiest achieved through training and assessment. Jamie
  15. I can imagine how gutted you were when you realised you still had to do the stump cut. Jamie
  16. We work at teh Royal Bank of Scotland HQ and they had some impressive fences round teh trees while construction was taking place. they were about 20ft tall, you had to apply for a key after you had the permit to work on teh tree. Very fancy, very expensive but its RBS Jamie
  17. Who do we have here that would be interested in pushing for this? I know there are many here with more in depth knowledge on the processes involved of pushing for qualifications that i have. I'm happy to work on at developing something, pushing the knowledge i have in the right direction to create something more legitimate than what there would appear to currently be. There are others i know that most probably don't venture here that are equally, if not more, knowledgeable. Anyone? Jamie

Anorak it may be but at least i'll be warm and dry Jamie
  19. I'm sure i heard:- A good groundsman will make a bad climber look good but a crap groundsman will make a good climber look bad. once the climber has cut the lowered bit, its up to the groundsman to bring it down safely and smoothly. Jamie
