  3. Unless you think you are too cheap, don't put your prices up and lose potential customers. It sounds like you need to: a) be honest with your customers and give them realistic lead time for booking jobs in b) be smart with your diary. Book jobs in but build in the odd 'buffer' day to allow for the odd job over-running/maintenance etc c) hire some more staff and build your business! Think of it as job security and opportunity for expansion, rather than a long list of jobs to get done. If paperwork and admin is tying up lots of your time that would be better spent elsewhere, can you streamline things (e.g use some clever IT for quotes and accounting) or even pay someone to help run the office side of things?
  4. Have dabbled with QGIS so can't claim to know its full capabilities. But, it has done everything that I have asked of it very well so far, and it's free. A friend in the know about GIS highly recommends it - apparently some local authrorities are even using it to save money on ESRI subscriptions.
  5. I can second that - Rob provides a great service. I never thought about asking him for training, that's a good idea.
  6. Ok, that's good. This is a good little booklet that explains things pretty well: Amazon.co.uk: the tree climbers companion: Books
  7. Hi David, I admire your ambition and thirst to learn to climb, but I have to say that it cannot be taught via a forum or even by watching videos of others climbing. If you are going to learn to climb trees safely, you absolutely must learn from someone competent face to face. There are too many things to go wrong otherwise - one slightly wrong knot or one carabiner in the wrong loop and you could have a serious fall. Please don't think I am trying to put you off or anything - your enthusiasm is great but needs to be channeled in a safe learning environment.
  8. Welcome to the forum TreeHuggerOrNot. It seems safe to assume that a treehugger you certainly ain't! I'm interested to try and understand your feelings about this tree. The photo you have posted shows a nice looking Hornbeam that must add considerable character to your garden, as well as provide some privacy from the surrounding houses. Is the bird mess the only issue? On balance, it seems like a fairly minor price to pay for such a nice tree. Are their other reasons why you don't like it - leaf debris, shade etc?
  9. This big old Catalpa came down in the winds a few weeks ago. I'm helping my buddy get it cleared up in the next few weeks.
  10. I use KeyTree (Keysoft Landscape - KeyTREE) CAD software. They offer specific training for producing tree survey plans.
  11. I spent a couple of days dismantling an re-building a mates log cabin last week. Quite impressed at the quality of it given it didn't cost him much.
  12. Welcome Stuart - thanks for introducing yourself. Try ringing Keith of Cotswold Tree Care - he's a nice chap and runs a good company. Hope you find the forum useful. Paul
  13. But you've asked a question and then not responded to the above comments! What's the frequency and nature of targets near the tree? Is it in a sheltered or exposed location?
  14. A ring of mulch around the base of the tree is good protection against strimmers - not only does it suppress grass and weed competition, but will provide a slow-release of nutrition for the local soil environment.
  15. I've heard that it's being discontinued now, so no further releases available. Best to check with Chris Skellern though. Sent from my SGP311 using Arbtalk mobile app
  16. Wouldn't it be easier just to attach a word document or pdf quote to the email? I have my logo and contact details in the signature of my emails. Sent from my SGP311 using Arbtalk mobile app
  17. If only there was a way to form a cooperative to share the cost of a copy. Just saying. Sent from my SGP311 using Arbtalk mobile app
  18. Excellent, thanks for the heads up Tony. I've been looking forward to seeing this. That probably makes me a bit sad. Sent from my SGP311 using Arbtalk mobile app
  19. It ain't right with milk and sugar in it! Sent from my HTC One S using Arbtalk mobile app
  20. An old dear once brought some 'coffees' for us, but appeared to have got the instant coffee mixed up with her bisto granules. Bleugh!
  21. I have found the nicest people can certainly turn weird when you talk about their neighbours. Having dealt with a few boundary hedge disputes in the past, I now avoid them like the plague as they always leave a bad taste in the mouth.
  22. Nicely done Matt. Sent from my HTC One S using Arbtalk mobile app
  23. Apparently birds don't like reflective things that move - try hanging old CDs of some strips of foil inside the trees to scare them off?
  24. A few of the key books have just been re-printed and can be had for a reasonable price here: Arboriculture
