  1. Email Keith Sacre at Barcham trees - he's the man in the know about these.
  2. I went to one last year. It was really good although much of it is repetition of what is in his book 'mad, bad and dangerous to know'. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. Not so - there are numerous British Standards relating to young trees, including the most recent BS8545 that bbtgaz refers to. Others include BS3936 (several parts) and BS4043 (two parts).
  4. Totally agree. I don't know what prompted the last minute change in venue but it obviously didn't work. There were a load of arbs at Capel on Friday anyway for the CAS seminar and ISA cert arb exams....that would have more than doubled the numbers.
  5. This is an interesting one - I think this is Ganoderma applanatum at the base of a Norway Spruce. Not something I have seen before but the texts I have here suggest that it's not unheard of.
  6. Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
  7. It's been three years now...are you near publishing yet?
  8. Can you elaborate? I've only used the air spade but not the soil pick. Are they that different? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  9. It's not quite the same tool apparently, but you can hire a soil pick pretty cheaply: Air Soil Pick for Hire - National Tool Hire Shops Not as refined for sure, but may be appropriate for some jobs.
  10. Have you seen it on Pear before then Tony? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  11. Thanks David. Yes, I assumed that the discolouration on the bark above was from the site of a previous bracket that has been knocked off. Unfortunately I can't take a slice as the tree is not local to me (I must start carrying a sharp knife in my survey kit bag). I did also wonder if it could be a Phellinus species as it's on Rosaceae?
  12. I am thinking this may be Ganodema pfeiffer but have not seen it on Pear before. Anyone else?
  13. I use Freeagent. Google it and take a look. I can give you a referral for 10% off if you like it. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  14. Awesome story - thanks for sharing.
  15. Did you get to use it? Is it as easy as he makes it look in the video? Sent from my HTC One S using Arbtalk mobile app
  16. I saw this today: Physics-exploiting axe splits wood in record time | News | Geek.com Looks interesting although I can't really get my head around how it works:blushing:
  17. Wow, superb photos. It looks really nice out there - especially compared to Birmingham!!
  18. I'm doing the same to France in June so would be interested to hear from others if there are any issues about this.
  19. Which thread? Sent from my HTC One S using Arbtalk mobile app
  20. Looks good, nice one! Sent from my HTC One S using Arbtalk mobile app

    Gps

I use a Getac and a Trimble handheld GPS for plotting trees, they both work fine but were more than £200. Using an app with aerial photos might work pretty well in most situations. I'm keen to try out GISpro soon. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gis-pro/id459109672?mt=8 Sent from my SGP311 using Arbtalk mobile app
  22. Wow, sounds great. Do you have a rough idea of costs for each trip. I'd love to do something like this and my wife thinks it would be good for me so I'm halfway there! Sent from my SGP311 using Arbtalk mobile app
  23. I used Steve O'Rourke in Worcester - so local to you. He's a mate of mine and I was pretty pleased with the website he made me. Barton Trees Steve O'Rourke
