  1. Tree Preservation Orders – general | Planning Practice Guidance If you want a PDF copy, hit 'print' in the top right corner and use a PDF writer to save it. Works a treat.
  2. I'm looking for an assistant surveyor in Bridgend for 6 weeks if you'd be interested in that? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. I am looking for two people to assist in a land and tree survey in Bridgend, South Wales starting from Mon Aug 18th until the end of September, 4 days per week. These roles would ideally suit a student or someone wishing to get some surveying experience. The daily tasks will be helping the main surveyor with locating and measuring plots of land across the Bridgend area. Within each plot we will be measuring the amount of tree and shrub cover, identifying all species and taking measurements of the trees. The assistant is not required to enter any information on to the survey database or necessarily identify the tree and shrub species, but some background knowledge would be helpful. The main requirements are reliability and enthusiasm to learn. Please PM me or call 07765 493633 for more information
  4. And this is Guignardia aesculi leaf blotch - also different from what you are seeing. As Chris said, you normally get some yellow panes around the darker brown blotches with this.
  5. I'm confident that is not leaf miner damage. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  6. That looks like drought stress to me. Is the drainage different on each side of the road? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  7. Question for you dog owners: do you take your dogs to work most of the time? What do you do on a hot day when the van is roasting? Just thinking about getting a dog at the moment. I'm not on the tools much anymore, just surveys and office days (on a farm). Just trying to think through the practicalities of having a dog with me at sites where a dog can't be let out e.g. roadside surveys, old industrial sites.... Would a lockable crate with a cover over it be the best thing on a hot day?
  8. Is it Box - Buxus sempervirens?
  9. I have a Haglof digital clinometer which is good. Very small but stupidly expensive (hence I got one off ebay). I have recently heard about a new app and phone attachment called Spike which looks amazing: ikeGPS | Spike. Might be worth pre-ordering one as it looks the bees knees.
  10. Yes I use it and think its great, although I haven't used other systems so can't draw comparisons. I have no accounting knowledge but find it easy to use. It produces professional looking invoices and has some great features such as automated emails to chase overdue payments. It links with my online business account so automatically updates as payments come in and go out. At any time it gives an instant snapshot of my profit, cash flow and tax liabilities. I can send you a referral code for 10% off the monthly fee if you like. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  11. Do you think air-spading is the most effective method of assessment for this decay then?
  12. Looking good Tony. I note from other threads that you are quite confident that Oaks fail pretty rarely due to this fungus. However, given that the tree in these photos is in a public space, did you do much to assess the extent of decay before reducing the crown?
  13. I'm having a go at glass blowing tomorrow. I'd love to try out a few more old crafts. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  14. Happy Birthday David. Hope you had a good one. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  15. Thanks for your reply. What makes you sure it's australe? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  16. Would folks agree that this is most likely G. pfeifferi? There were FFBs in two locations - the larger on an old stem wound at around 6m and the smaller one in the main fork of co-dominant stems at about 7m. The shadow on the second picture makes it hard to see properly. I don't remember seeing this before - mostly Fomes fomentarius above ground level on Beech.
  17. If you're up for some CAD stuff check out KeyTree LT from Keyscapes systems. I wouldn't be without it. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk

  21. Hi Chris, Yes, it will be a competency and will hopefully be LANTRA endorsed. This training is crucial to our industry if we are to have a half-decent urban forest in 50 years time.
  22. Thanks for the feedback. What did you find most interesting? Did they discuss the Kew Gardens case?
  23. The Consulting Arborist Society runs a series of Areas of Professional Competency, in which Professional Members demonstrate their skills. The latest of these is 'Young Trees: Achieving Longevity in the Landscape', which is to be launched on 22nd and 23rd July at Barcham Trees (with a special launch discount of £100 per delegate compared to the normal price). Some people suggest that this is little more than putting a tree in a hole. Others, with years of planting trees, may think that there is little more for them to learn. However, the process of taking a tree, growing it in the nursery, being able to assess nursery stock prior to planting to ensure quality, and selecting trees suitable for their setting, is complex. Keith Sacre, who chaired the BS8545 Drafting Committee, brings several decades of experience in nursery production, together with access to the latest research on species selection including for drought tolerance. He is also exploring work on the importance of the growing media in sustaining trees in the longer term. Young Trees: The Wider Picture| Consulting Arborist Society
  24. Welcome to the forum Bixler - good to have you here. I sense you and Jomoco have some history - that's all good but I would ask that if there is stuff that is not directly related to the thread topics you guys discuss it off-forum. We try to keep Arbtalk a laid back and informative place, I'm sure you will both understand that.
  25. I have a Sony Experia Tablet Z and an iPad. The Sony is brilliant - great screen, very light, splashproof and I like the Android system. However, in the end I bought an iPad too - because nobody makes decent bomb-proof cases for the Sony tablet. After dropping it once and chipping the corner I wasn't prepared to keep risking it with site work. The iPad has been great. It's in a Lifeproof case which is drop proof and fully waterproof. The apps are also great. It's not as customisable as the Sony but overall it is a better option for me to use out and about - particularly as I also ditched my PC and got a Macbook so everything I do on the iPad is ready for me in the iCloud. Arguably it's no different than backing up with Dropbox etc. If you want something cheap(ish) and reliable I'd go for an iPad mini in a Lifeproof/Otterbox case.
