  1. Sorry Dean, but the way I seeit , you've not got a starling problem, you've got a PEOPLE PROBLEM. I mean WTF!?! whats wrong with a. people - and b. the company? The PLC should tell the nieghbours to f*uck off sharpish and stop being such a bunch of useless excuses, and whoever's complaining should have a herd of elephants sh*t on their cars. That would put a bit of starling feaces into perspective! Grrr. I suppose people would be happy if al the trees were felled, the site drenched in paraquat and DDT, and all the starlings crisped with a flamethrower! Grrrrr!
  2. I know I know! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah... oh dear oh dear HahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahwhattalaughHahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah, funniest thing in ages:001_tongue: Just get my hair net, then its off out in the Nissan Patrol to go rescue a few broken down 'definative' 4x4's..
  3. Larry, I recently took on an ex forces chap, he had no experience and had just passed his certs. 4 months later he is one of my most important employee's, leading his own team. This is purely down to his excellent self discipline, timekeeping, ability to hold responsibilty, organzational ability and a penchant for being a very quick earner. So all things are possible for you If I could recomend a career path in that locality, Scottish and southern Electric are taking all their cutting and Arb work in house. If the MOD will pay for your training, dont bother getting an 'Arb' course, get all your Electrical Arb tickets and get into the line clearance side.
  4. Dean, hangliding is safer than paragliding.
  5. I own 2, but prefer my Nissan Patrol
  6. Well, that did give me a lot of entertainment:001_smile:
  7. By the way, the rule is, your only allowed to say nasty things about landrovers IF YOU ALREADY OWN ONE.
  8. I know:001_tt2:
  9. TD5 makes the same cloud of smoke. Great innit?
  10. Ive had loads of Defenders and Rangies in the past, and I too now prefer a little comfort and reliabiliy -
  11. Yeah, I get them sorts occasionally too.
  12. Landrovers (Defenders) are a complete enigma, and manage to be a rolling dichotomy. How can something so awsome be so utterly crap at the same time? Owning a Landrover is like having a HUGE penis - that suffers from constant impotence, incontinence, and occasionaly falls right off.
  13. Ditto what stu said about the fourtrack, but to be honest you have a lot of choice other than Dihatsu. Look at Isuzu trooper, nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero or Toyota landcruiser.
  14. every log burner I know has endless 'downtime' - like everytime I fail to put logs in it. I know that some of the more complex boilers have issues - mainly with electronic sensors. Lets face it, you'll never get the kind of reliability of oil and gas with a woodboiler. but long term, how reliable is the supply fossil fuels?
  15. Will it be nice to look at? Yes, it will look like a small garden shed. Be a feature? not like your little log boiler... but I have a big old farmhouse with 14 radiators, an office and 2 workshops to heat.
  16. No. most european boilers run at over 85% efficiency even with fresh chip. All your doing is usingthe exhaust gasses to heat the boiler rather than the direct flame. Effectively your gassifying the chip and using the heat and combusting gasses to heat your boiler. Certain boilers have feed issues... and some dont. its down the design. And after nearly 30 years of feeding a log boiler, I'm sick of it.
  17. HA. you read my mind... Going to build myself a woodchip fired inclined grate furnace with 2 pass 30kw boiler. It will have to take fresh chips from my tree work, not g30 25% mc chips. I'm going to design the whole thing onto a skid and put a roof and sides on it so it requires minimum installation costs.
  18. Going back over the lst few posts, The idea of this thread is about a Specific Boiler / Heating system for Tree surgeons. A Tree surgeons boiler needs to be able to burn fresh chips, not stacked timber subsequently chipped. Stacking timber for large district heating systems works well, but I want a boiler that will take fresh chip out the back of the truck. There are step grate systems out there that are as small as 10kw, but they are expensive, and are designed for breaking up the clinker from burning grain etc. Its not essential to have a stepgrate system, a well insulated refractory lined combustion chamber will burn 60% MC chips, particularly if its an inclined grate. I'm with Skyhuck. I think £5 -6k should buy a boiler and chip store.
  19. What do you think is a reasonable price?
  20. Good feedback - I think a m3 of chip would have less kwh than logs, down to the density of the fuel. I do know that if your in an urban environment, wood pellets are the best option. I think that chip heating would suit certain people well, but not be suitable for heavily populated urban areas, as you need a certain amount of space to site the boiler and the fuel hopper. I'm thinking that the whole thing is better outside, and pipe the heat inside. If you chip fresh timber into the back of your truck, and tip it undercover, it will dry down to 35% quite quickly if turned. I think people would get adept at knowing what type of chip to put in a burner. Ash or sycamore chip not in leaf would be ideal - Leylandii chipped in the rain would be less than ideal
  21. Thats my biggest issue too. so totally unsuitable for you? what do you heat with currently- logs? Thats what I've found. I think if a boiler of this type is to be succesfull, it must be capable of burning FRESH chips, straight from the chipper, without any screening. The Only boiler I have come across so far that will do this is the REKA. I got quoted £20k for a full setup
  22. Compared to what? Logs? or Pellets? expand on your percieved storage issues... I want to try and reslove why this system is not being utilised further, when its so widely used across europe.
  23. Thought I'd get a discussion going on home heating with woodchips. I'm sort of surprised that this is'nt a much bigger thing with tree surgeons, given the high gas / oil prices, and given we sit on an endless supply of free fuel. I currently heat with logs, but after 30 odd years of doing so, I'm sick and tired of the work involved, especially when running the business takes so much time. So I want an automated woodchip system, capable of combusting any old chips straight from my chippers. Whats put me off so far is the high capital cost of units. I've been quoted anything up to £20,000, for a 30kw boiler! So whats your thoughts? whats putting people off? Cost? Lack of knowledge?
