  1. Blimey! I feel like the little man now.. I would get that checked out. You should have enough power there.... P.S. at least my 6 wheeler has an 8.6 275hp euro2 Cummins...
  2. Whats the engine in yours? Mines got a 4 ltr turbo 4 pot. Masses of power really.
  3. I'm always wary of offering opinions on how I would do something I can only see in a photo- But... Like Peter, I would have been attached to the main stem, for the same reasons.
  4. Under powered in what way? My merc wont break any acceleration records, but once on the move, it goes very well.
  5. Well, to be honest, its illegal to tow at more than 50mph anyway, but you get my gist. How you getting on with your new truck?

Nice one reg. I have 2 pieces of burr Elm with the same plan in mind. Here's what I did with some other Elms I felled -
  7. What do you call old? for me, a ten year old truck will still have plenty of life left.
  8. last year I had a mix of birch and alder. best blend of firewood I've ever used.
  9. I've never subscribed to that poem. Ash is good sure. But Elm will melt your radiators, Oak needs about 3 years to dry properly, and Alder makes one of the best firewoods possible.

Nice bob, got any to spare?
  11. My Merc 7.5 tonner is the compact vario chassis. I can get 11 m3 of chip, pull 3.5 tonnes at 75mph, carry all my tools and equipment, and it has a slightly bigger footprint than a transit.
  12. Shame on you Tony, you porty abuser you! I love my porty, from the early one we made from a piece of scaffold pole, to the latest from ISC (made about 3 miles from here) In my very humble opinion, the GRCS is a vastly overpriced piece of kit. What makes it so is the harken yachting winch - and anything that comes from that niche market is overpriced. I can supply a hydraulc 4 tonne winch with remote for a third of the price of a grcs.
  13. Snap, took the kids to see Rataouille today. Laughed my arse off. Watched 300 last night, great epic about the Battle of Thermopyele. Pete, another great one for the Kids is 'The Last Mimzy' on Dvd.
  14. Lee, what in your opinion was so good about it? In my eyes, a Bandit 90, or similar would be a much better machine..?
  15. Reg, when I started this thread, I was hoping you would bring in the block driver. I think it is one of those pieces of kit that would get only occasional use - but when it was used, it would be invaluable. My hope was to get as many views as possible, because I've worked with climbers who will rope off every single chunk - even when its unnecessary.
  16. looks like dead Elm too me.
  17. Well in a lot of cases, the climber is paid to turn up and put the tree on the ground. Usually he's getting paid a suitable rate for doing so. Better to have him doing what he does best, than messing around on the ground.
  18. There was an interesting thread at the treehouse by Deva about lowering chunks, and it got me thinking. I really hate lowering big chunks of wood back against the stem, and always opt for bombing blocks down into the landing zone. Works for me, no matter how tight the LZ. If I dont want them to roll, I get the groundies to make a wall of timber to catch them. I also never put felling cuts in blocks, unless it goes over about 5 foot long. I find it easier and faster to just power right through with the saw, and slide the block of the top. Once they get over about 28" dia, I get the groundies to yank them off with a pull line. So whats your opinions on getting the stem down?
  19. I think the Groundsmans guide portrays the kind of perfect groundsman we'd all want. We're never going to get him, but it does'nt make it a bad guide. Steve, I know you say that some of those points are not the groundsmans responsibility, but would'nt it be nice if they did do those things? And like Reg says, climbers could take on board a lot of the points. Tim, your exactly right. Farming stock makes for brilliant ground guys.
  20. Thats not much of an endorsment...
  21. 4 correct numbers?
  22. I dont think we're watching the same vid?
  23. Grim? looked hilarious.
  24. Nice reg, very nice. What camera were you using?
  25. Groundy sounds like he needs a slap...?
