  1. I think the collective protection measures being prioritised over individual measures is where we've taken a wrong turn on this issue. What Tom and I would both like to know is whether there is any actual accident or near miss data to support it? To my mind the goal of risk assessment is to prevent injury and death. So are there less injuries and deaths in tree work using mewps properly compared to rope and harness properly?
  2. The right hand drive conversion can be expensive though.
  3. I would have thought Danish oil would work well, penetrates without leaving a sticky finish so to speak.
  4. That doesn't need diagonal bracing, the table legs made out of flat slabs do the same job. Looks really good Bob, will the Schaefer move it or is it a telehandler job?
  5. A little more, it's about 8" square and an inch deep. A complete fill burns for 8 hours, but you can part fill for shorter burns.
  6. I don't think it would work with planings unless you can pack them really tightly. Worth a go though. Shouldn't be too hard to convert planings into dust. The material they sell for the purpose is like pencil sharpenings in size. Sanding dust might work if you can find a way of collecting it while keeping it clean.
  7. Yup, know exactly what you're getting at. Have a look at the Pro Q smoke generator, low tech, just fill with sawdust and light it and it burns for 8 hours. No need to light a fire and tend, plus it doesn't heat the smoke box by more than about 1c above ambient.
  8. So you pipe the smoke into the cold smoker then? The smoke generator is a really nifty bit of kit, you can do the whole thing in a cardboard box if you want.
  9. Biggest 4 wheeler is 18 tonne gross. Ten tonne ish payload. If you want to move plant with it go for a beavertail with cheese wedge ramps, and put some bolster sockets in.
  10. Ideal job for an 8 wheeler, but they're a rare breed now. Easiest way would be a 26 tonne 6 wheel, ideally 6x4 with a flat or drop side body. Put some bolsters on and your good to go. Payload somewhere in the 14-15 tonne range. Running costs aren't much more than running a light commercial really.
  11. Planings are good, as are shavings from a lathe. Are you using a smoke generator?
  12. It depends what kind of smoking he's doing. Cold smoking usually needs dust, which is sieved out of normal wood chips, obviously you only get a tiny amount of dust to a large quantity of chip. Hot smoking over charcoal usually uses chunks of wood, halfway between logs and kindling in size. The one market that is well served with Arb type chips (30-50mm) is where you want to add a little bit of smoke flavour on a normal charcoal bbq, just sprinkle a handful over the coals for ten minutes at the end of the cook.
  13. Looks like Elm timber to me.
  14. Not phone cable. Insulators (square brown ceramic jobbies) No footpegs on pole. Yellow warning sign on pole. It's abc cable, 415v 3 phase.
  15. If you're not qualified and authorised by the dno then you need a shutdown.

If you have a trawl through the old threads you'll probably reel in the answer.

It's pretty tight on the 12x6, very much doubt you'll get them on.

    Avant 420?

Probably yes, but it depends what on your business and the type of work etc. I can get the loader and tracked chipper on one trailer which is very useful for me. There is a bit of overlap between the two machines, the loader is faster travel speed, great for loading stuff with a big bucket, raking or sweeping with a big brush. It will also run an auger or post driver, but then so would a digger. The digger is obviously the tool if you want to actually dig with it.

    Avant 420?

Mini digger plus a little forwarding trailer could work well on some jobs. In an ideal world Id have one of everything.
