  1. Partly, on smaller quantities the axe/maul will outperform a splitter, but if youre splitting a large amount of timber then the splitter wont tire out. plus swinging an axe is a good physical exercise, is therapeutic, and is less boring
  2. Luckily for us, we're all professionals, and wouldnt do anything wrong...ever, because we're good like that. So this whole scenario will not apply to us, and it will remove unqualified scum from our streets, by making examples of them. This in turn will generate far more work for us qualified types, so we'll all go to work with a smile on our faces and spare cash in our pockets once more. thanks Mr NPTC assessor man, and Mr H&SE man, and of course the courts for saving us all from this cretinous being, the world is now a safer place, we can all sleep at night now. god Bless you.
  3. If youre one pint over or ten, youre still over and still breaking the law, rules are rules, no room for leeway according to some.
  4. I have to agree on that, but the point is thT those who should be most affected by the case, the flagrant offenders, will not be, because they will not give 2 hoots about it. And isnt just bending the rules a little just as bad? After all, you know you shouldnt do it but you do anyway? Back to the drink drive analogy, is it ok if you dont get caught? Oh well, at least no one will be wearing non ppe clothing to work off this forum, now they know there is a massive fine awaiting them. Now which one of you guys is an NPTC assessor? Have to watch for your sort waiting to grass up for non conforming bootlaces.
  5. I doubt very much it will change a thing. So one person got caught and fined. Big deal, they wouldnt have hadd a case if the snoop hadnt snooped. If I had the time tomorrow, I would lay a bet that I could visit a dozen tree men around here breaking the H&S rules. If challenged about the lack of safety ppe, they would claim it a waste of money. i can think of three whose combined years work wiuld exceed quite a few "pros" wearing all the kit, will this case change them? Of course it wont. So what good will actually come of this case?well an example has been made to those of us who already abide by the rules, the States coffers have a littke more cash in them to pay off the snoop, 1001 companies bending the rules wont know or care of this case so will carry on as before. Yes, thats taught em
  6. Well I get a good deal then as my blades are nearly a foot long x2 sides x 2 blades
  7. I pay that for each Jo Beau blade, but they have to be sharpened on both sides. Now have 3prs for that, so not realy worth the hassle of trying to sharpen my own, better things to do with my time, and it keeps someone else employed in the workshop.
  8. What a beast!
  9. As well as speeding, drink/driving takes and ruins lives, the fines for such are paltry, but fact nontheless, to put this fellows offence above drink driving in the scheme of things therefore is flawed too. My point is, how can this case be more serious than either speeding or drink/driving, when in this case no one was killed injured or even affected by this mans actions. Surely a court works on the facts before it, and the severity of the punishment should be proportianate to the fallout of that mans actions?
  10. No, I dont accept that. He may be a clown, he may be a fool, but who is to say the HSE system as it is is the best way? Speeding used to be points and a fine, now there is the opportunity to educate speeders, and make them realise the consequence of their actions. speeding costs far more lives and serious injuries than Joe Bloggs wearing trackies and trainers to cut a tree, but the education route is already proven to work. IMO he has only committed a minor offence, had someone then been injured or killed it would be a major offence. As far as drink/driving goes, I dont recall any drink/driver getting such a large fine for a first offence, correct me if Im wrong please.
  11. When a drink driver kills someone through his own stupidity, the fines and penalties are a farce, the fines in this case therefore are disprortionate. Had the employee receivrd an injury through the negligence of the employer, the fine would have been appropriate, a fine line, but an important one. i know we all would like standards to improve, that we are all against the dodgy cowboy element, but is the nosy parker way the way we wish to go? Big Brother is one step too far IMO.The argument that it costs the NHS good money is flawed, no one was injured in this case, therefore no costs were incurred surely? All this case may lead to is another struggling small business going the wall, costing the State even more than the fine in supporting two families. Education is the key here, more along the lines of speed awareness courses, compulsory education in ths results of action, costing say £100 for the day, loss of a days earnings etc, surely this would be far more beneficial? We can argue the case till the cows come home, but at the end of the day we need a better, safer working community, and I feel the HSE need a far more proactive way of solving this.
  12. my POV for what its worth.... The boss was working in an unsafe manner, untrained and not wearing the correct ppe...big deal! Just one of many in this country, the fine is disproportionate to the offence IMO. The employee was put in danger, by not being trained and not being supplied with ppe, this is the big issue here, the fine relates to this part I feel, and in this part is iin proportion to the offence, the bosses in some cases have to start accepting their responsibilty as employers of others. The neighbour.... Well what can I add to what s already been said in this thread. Are all of us whiter than white, do everything in a totally safe manner. Would we all stand up to such scrutiny. Be careful out there, and be careful who is watching you...
  13. Thanks for the prompt and efficient service Anyone needing Jo-Beau parts theyre youre first port of call.
  14. i think the ram speed may be down to H&S, not sure. TBH I dont theyre any slower than processor rams, and with shorter travel. iwould never have bought one if it hadnt been for my health, Ive always split easily enough with an axe and maul, probably be back to that before long, at least the splitter will last longer!!
  15. Really, piles arent that big a deal, hardly worth worrying too much about. said getting fitter and developing strength will help no end. There is plenty of potential for more serious complaints in this job, hernias and ruptures, back pain, rotor cuff injuries and many many others. Keeping yourself in shape will help reduce the chance of these occurring.
  16. i think you must be careful not to injure something else instead when you change technique.
  17. IMO is it so cheap to get chipper blades reground professionally, it is barely worth the time and effort of attempting to do myself. However if you do have the tools and experience, then whynot have a go. If your worried about the varying weights, then a set of scales to check each one is the same would solve this?
  18. I got a 5t Sealey splitter due to health reasons making me unable to splti with an axe over the last winter. Yes its slower than an axe, but if you cant swing an axe its quicker. Being an acquaintance of the Sealey area manager I got a good price, and with a years warranty itll do me for now. i wouldnt want one to use commercially though.
  19. Hope this is of use Do I have a legal right to a TV signal? | This is Money
  20. He is a tree surgery company, should be able to cope
  21. Sky engineers are the laziest around, they always blame anything other than the equipment, because they are trained like that IMO. Ive removed a complete row of connies on the request of a Sky engineer, only for it to be a faulty lead (they found out later) I would offer to reduce them by say 20feet as a token gesture, but if they wish to have them removed then expect them to offer some sort of financial incentive. Get them to double check all other options first though, including the fact that we are currently undergoing quite exceptional solar flare activity this year which will peak later this year. This affect all electrical equipment, including Sky.
  22. Ive had about 5 jobs adjacent to train lines, and each time the answer has been different depending on which manager I spoke to. one manager asked for a bond of about £110,000 for a main line, next bloke I spoke to said hed never heard of it, so someone was looking to line his pockets methinks. i ended up having a railway safety officer come from Waterloo to check it all out, and he just said go ahead and hed get the trains to give me a warning blast as they came under the bridge up the track. Another job they insisted on doing themselves and billing the client, the client then said they couldnt afford the extortianate fee and wouldnt bother, so they did it for free!!! It seems a didferent story every time with no real meat on the bones.
  23. This posts reads Oh so wrong, good luck finding a lad
  24. bump and note edited changes to the dates
  25. i didnt mean just help youself, I meant if I was his boss, and we had a good relationship, and the harness was 18months, I would say he could just have it as a token of goodwill. Does that make more sense???
