  1. Can you put any pics of it, and details of pull strength etc, and location (roughly)
  2. maybe the thought of golden handshakes turns your stomach, but at least they wont be milking you and I dry for all eternity. Just maybe some of these top fat cats will re-invest in the forests as the miners did with the mines? The days of nationalised industry are well behind us, and thank God for that.
  3. The plantations of forest were indeed planted in order that we would be self-sufficient following numerous wars. Nowadays warships arent built of timber, we hardly need masses of timber for pit-props, the large number of trenches in the 1st World War consumed vast quantities and so on. We are no longer self-sufficient in any commodity let alone timber, we cant feed or heat ourselves. Our electricity gas water and food comes from abroad, and timber is imported from the Baltic States far cheaper than we can produce it, even with a subsidised dinosaur such as the FC. The biggest asset of woodlands and forest these days is probably the recreational market, and this can be run, probably even at a profit, by private concerns. It will help create a fairer market, where market forces dictate, rather than the Fat Cat FC getting govt hand-outs (our money) and having a distinctive unfair advantage over the private sector.
  4. Was it ever truly viable? From recollection it used to get massive kickbacks from the govt, was in an unfair position as opposed to private concerns. Surely now it will help level the playing field and create a better market for all? As a country, we do not need to, nor can afford to support these top-heavy nationalised concerns.
  5. Like-wise, with an end-line bowline, place the tail of the rope through
  6. Here ya go Mark, double-bowline on the bight, with spike, stick or whatever to allow easy untying.
  7. Anyone fancy knocking up a vid of one of these behemoths working? I'd love to see it working to its potential
  8. Have you tried Garnhams?
  9. I stand corrected, thanks for the correct info:thumbup1:
  10. Thanks for that, hmmm we hve enough pop atm, hence the kindling machine idea:biggrin:
  11. Hmmm well I havent seen him on here for a while now, perhaps he doesnt want to be bombarded with questions at the mo? BTW can you send a linky for this arborists forum, can t seem to find the one you mean:confused1:
  12. To my knowledge all the business phones inc mobiles are down, so unless they have given their private nos out I dont know how we'd get ahold of them.
  13. I'm guessing that at 10 ton pull would be correct as this would convert to 4.54® tonne and looking at its dimensions this would be feasable
  14. Thanks Paul very useful:thumbup1: A lot can be learned from near misses, I mean the more serious type, and to at least discuss what went wrong in the event as well as making a report, in order that the event can be avoided in the future.
  15. Welcome to the forum, and congrats on getting 30/1. I would be trying to find a few days now with a local company to get some experience up.
  16. I understand he is still under-going treatment for his injuries, and to my knowledge is taking a break for a while. As for Steve, he was helping out Mike since his injury, but I cant remember where he is now.
  17. Prochip is no longer trading.
  18. Difficult tho it is, Treeboi's mate doesnt have an idea of how its sold on, that appears to be why he is making enquiries here. Not knowing what facilities he has makes it hard to advise, but you can buy timber in by the cord (a stack 8ft x 4ft x 4ft) or in 3m lengths which is easier for log trucks to deliver in. I would maybe recommend he calls around local tree surgeons to see if they want to sell on their timber, but bear in mind many are now processing firewood themselves as more and more clients are installing wood-burners. Ideally, he should have posed this question after last winter, and started processing timber in preparation for sales this winter, green wood will barely season in time now.
  19. The secret is just to be organised, as Ian says get the food on and work while it cooks, it really doesnt cost time. The aroma of pork sausages with apple and herbs really is a great incentive to pull your finger out, or a cookpot with a stew prepared the night before, a hunk of bread to mop the gravy.....awesome. A happy crew is a productive crew, its not always about the money you know (and its got to be cheaper than Mr Blairs posh caff brekkies!!)
  20. Under RIDDOR what is deemed a near miss... by this I mean is it just a major near miss such as a dislodged hanger narrowly missing groundie with the potential to cause major injury/death, or more "trivial" events? In the past working for various companies, any reportable injuries were not written in the Accident book in case the HSE called in, the view being it would make the company "look bad". Not just talking about tree cos. here, but warehousing as well, so this seems to be common practise.
  21. Not been charged yet, but with all these new govt cuts, I suspect more and more councils will start to charge.
  22. Does anyone hire out one of these in this area, if so details please
  23. Depends on the Land Agent, they seem to love sending a student in to mark up for the practise, usually mark up all the wrong trees and certainly never enough of the right trees.
  24. Why not sell them off through this site.... captive and interested audience:thumbup1:
  25. Wow useful info there Rupert:thumbup:
