Do you get paid for lunch?

Day rate for me, I wouldn't work by the hour as it could cause no end to issues. If you charge your day rate and then take it as a swings and roundarounds kind of approach, some days you have a late others earlier. If you end up working for someone who you constantly end up working long hours for find another firm. Most companies have similar working times and as someone said before it's up to them weather you have a proper break or scoff a sandwich when you have 5 minutes.

Hourly rate can cause issues especially if the boss is not on site with you.

Sorry should have said this for firewood processing not tree work as such. Often there is not a whole days work to be had. Other jobs are long way from home so worth working late to clear a pile to avoid a return trip.

 

Maria don't you eat during the day? I would fall over without a good supply of sandwiches.

I think it depends on how you charge in the first place, if you have made a point of charging x per hour then charging x whilst your sitting around having lunch may not sit well with customers. This is another reason why I prefer price per job- so there's no petty quibbling. At the worst if I am doing a days digger work it's X per day and that includes breaks- if the job takes hOur longer than the 'day' then I don't chArge more than my day rate and vis Verza. Personally I can't stand hour rates- it can get very petty and someone usually ends up feeling hard done by. I have 3 rates, 1- a small 1 hour type job that gets charged to include travelling, 2- a half day- which allows me to do another half day elsewhere, or 3 a full day- charged regardless of what time in the afternoon I'm finished be it 3 or 6pm.

I pay no-one over lunch breaks, neither staff nor sub-contractors.

However, lunch is on the company and most days it is a 4 course sit down restaurant meal with choice of wine, cider or lemonade. Special menu/price for workers around 12euros all in.

It is traditional in France for companies to provide lunch for employees.

Most Brits can't handle it at first and would prefer to have 20min sitting in the cab but they soon come round to the French way of thinking.

Interesting your view on hourly rates. Clearly from this thread it's not a popular way to charge. Never had any complaints but they may be biting their tongues. Surly paying for the exact amount of work done is the fairest rout and least likely way to leaving anyone hard done by? Might look at day rates but not going down job rate as that would require looking at jobs and quoting which sounds like a right ball ache for just cutting up logs.

Hourly rates with unpaid lunch seems to me to be the fairest. Almost all the trades we employ work that way. Their rate is expected to be several times higher to cover overheads such as equipment and holidays etc. Harsh words would be said if they finished at 2 o'clock and charged for a full day, but it also gives them the option of working that extra hour to finish the job.

 

We have just put some engineering jobs out for quotes and it's basically few companies charging OTT with the rest in a race to the bottom. Going what I have read on here in the past that seem to be the case in tree surgery. Possibly a rethink on pricing is needed?
