Unimogs

realistically do unimogs make financial sense in any way whatsoever? Cos were talking about £30k for a half decent one and odds are that will break and cost a fortune to maintain, then theres the fuel consumption....what do you get about 10mpg tops? Plus the authorities are cracking down on supposedly agricultural vehicles being used for urban tree work so you may not be able to run it on red diesel for much longer. Fine, there off road abilities are good, and the pto will power a decent sized chipper, but then that rig would have limited application in urban areas.... it is unlikely it would even fit on acacia drive. What is the point of getting one of them when for the same price you could get 2 landrover 130s which would have the same off road abilities and the same load carrying ability between the 2 of them. Or even better, you could get a whole fleet of transits which would do 90% of the work youd use the mog for, only for less money and more conveneince and just better in every way. So, what are unimogs good for apart from site clearances with very poor access? Or are they just a very expensive penis enlargement? Im waiting unimog owners.........

 INCOMING!!!Tin Hats everybody!

if you are good then get a mog, because if you want to clear brash quickly you want a small unit with a big chipper. so get a mog, mine was huge and we got it everywhere, ok not into every driveway, but i would just stack it high and winch it down the driveway. if you struggle to make ends meet running a small tipper and tow behind dont waste your time with a mog, if you have loads of work, cant be bothered with 2 vehicles and staff wages killing you every week and cant keep up with clearing your feet on jobs, then get a mog and 12inch chipper. plenty do it, they aint stupid, i did it for 7 years and my mog made me loads of money, it did make me cry sometimes when i got a breakdown, but that was my fault for not doing regular servicing, and not having a descent mechanic at the end of a phone when i needed one, i sold mine because i wasnt using it much, but i miss it big time.

They have their uses. I see them as a usefull small tractive unit - great to tow a big self powered chipper, a small low loader, or high capacity trailer.

I see them mostly as an Arb status symbol, and often used as a jack of all trades, master of none.

Expect to fork out £30k for a good one, and a lot for any ancillary equipment.

I prefer running trucks with more specialised equipment to do the job. Most of the arbo unimogs I see look rediculous as oversized chip trucks.

Like Stevie says, dont buy one if your not already busy. I would also say dont buy one unless your getting regular large site clearance work.

all true, im using our mog tomorrow, i can get what we need done in one load, if i was using a van it would be a good few loads, with nowhere local to dump the chip.

were lucky, one of out groundys used to have his own mog hire company, our mog came from him a few years back so he knows it inside out, if our mechanic cant fix it, kenny can
