What do you think of this Mr E?

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/southern-rail-train-drivers-set-to-strike-despite-24-pay-rise-offer-pgcr82dlq

Rejected a 24% (11k) pay rise over 4 years and a 4 day week...

Fat end of £60k pa for driving a train...

I think 24% over 4 years is a blooming good pay rise. Would I have voted for strike action over it?, definitely not.

I don't think £60k/year is over the top for the responsibility of hundreds of passengers each journey mind.

Are you sure you've got that the right way round Andy?

Maybe not?

But all my friends and family who are self employed pay next to no tax. Mostly cash in hand doing Arb work, grounds work and window cleaning. The ones who do charge vat write off cars, trucks, take dividens, pay the wife etc etc etc. I don't begrudge them but £30k paying tax is a lot less than £30k dodging it.

That's a fair point, but, the driver is a single component in a complex safety system.

They do not bear anything like the entire, exclusive weight of responsibility for passenger safety exclusively on their shoulders.

Yes but a lapse in concentration can result in one or more trains crashing as has happened a couple of times these last years. They are responsible for that and their pay should reflect that.

This happened out the back of my place a few years back.

It's ok until it goes wrong.

A local resident that didn't want to be named....... Wonder who that was.:001_smile:

I'm deeply offended, physically bruised and mentally scarred by the presumption that legal and morally legitimate tax efficiencies for the self employed might be referred to as "dodging" one's dues to society. These are government sponsored policies to recognise, recompense and support the "engine room" of the UK economy - the small business.

I'm so upset it's delayed my finish!

This has resulted in being late home and missing a planned meal.

I'll have to divert the 17 plate Hilux via "The Racehorse" where I'll have to endure a steak dinner and a couple of pints to replenish the blood sugar prior to getting home.

It's a thankless, demanding and undervalued industry - the AA survey proves it!

You in the off shore tax free environment Andy?? Just wondered... 😆

:P

I don't see why anyone should pay more than a flat percentage than anyone else, you work harder and earn more you still pay more. So any way of dodging is ok in my eyes.

I don't pay any tax in the UK no, lol. I pay minimum NI contributions to meet the years and levels required to get a pension from the UK.

The self employed electrician I use is in the process of giving up to become a train driver as he thinks the pay, holiday ,pension and four day week is a far better prospect than what he is on now and he has been an electrician for 18 yrs. apparently there are a lot of people applying and it has taken over a year just to get to sit some exams.

I'm not talking cash in hand Andy, I'm talking genuine SE, not fiddle merchants.

Your statement is totally nonsensical if you live in the real world.
