If I saw someone coming at me with a non-ballistic weapon, I'd fight them. I like to think I'd have a go either way. I'm not suggesting we batter anyone who might be black and therefore must be a terrorist.

I don't understand your problem here. 

Everyone should have the capacity to defend themself. If not you stand a significantly higher chance that you only have yourself to blame when you're unable to handle a situation where a nutter goes nuts.  Situational awareness isn't just about fighting, it's also about avoiding conflict. Whatever it takes to get home safe. You probably have a moral duty to look after those who are weaker than you too. 

Nothing to do with race or religion, just human nature.
