I personally wouldn't get out of bed for 12 an hour.

I think selling time is crap, sell a product for a price. If you told me its £50 to fix my hedgecutter I would think that's ok and I would want you to do it as quick as possible. I wouldn't trust someone who said they sat there for 8 hours trying to fix it and I then have to hand over £96 when they may have smashed it in an hour but felt disheartened that they'd just fixed a £500 machine for £12 labour. I couldn't possibly know how long it took you. I do most of my own repairs but I think my local dealer have a fixed price per item plus parts

Seems reasonable to me but I'm on alot less.

It's plus parts so there's minimal other costs and at that price they should keep busy and get happy customers. Just wish I lived closer.

Decide what hourly rate you are worth being employed then double it for self employed.

Tools, van, premises, electricity, accountant all need paying for. You will not work 100% of your time and there will be jobs that go wrong and customers that won't pay.

Good luck with it but I would put your prices up otherwise what's the point.

From what my customers say it appears their main concerns are the inability of their local dealer to understand the issues their machine has, long lead times and the ability to "knock the nail in" first time and every time.

 

Whether you charge a tenner or £50 per hour doesn't tend to be high on the list but to get back a fully working machine that will do a year plus service without further issues is high on the list.

 

I know GK is damn busy and from what he says, he does the business and knows his stuff. My own business is going the same way, I don't need to charge as much as my overheads are lower but my work ethic is similar, I expect my customers to walk away knowing that they have got damn good value for money and I am earning a living.

 

Your order-book says it all and repeat business is a view of how good a job you have done!

 

£12 an hour......either it is a fiddle - say a job takes double the time it really takes just to get the customers in or make on spares i.e. spark plug or filter at £5 each or the OP wont last long!

Spuds point of competence is key, £30 + an hour is not a lot for a decent well equipped spannerman that gets to the problem quickly.

I can't get it with a bag of spanners and a test meter, b0d, twenty five nicker/hour, plus ten bob a mile for me tranny. To cheap? (Subbing mind).

We charge £28 plus vat per hour, regular trade customers are £24 plus vat plus parts , with some fixed price jobs, we are competitive compared to others around here. The golden rule is charge out at least 2.5 times per hour what you pay your employee

£12.00 hr ...very cheep indeed!... delivery and collection as well !!, vehicle ,fuel, insurance ,time and so on.

Cant comment on the OP"s expectation of income or overheads but would be interested how the Hourly rate was arrived at ?

I certainly couldn't run at £12.00 a hr ..even if i got £12.00 a HR for ...EVERY HR .. whatever i was doing ,be it paperwork , research ,maintenance of workshops kit !!

Our rates differ, as has been shown on the posted comments here for many reasons.
