Why do people buy these sort of things when all it seems to replace is a Prussik loop? The traditional being cheaper and likely more reliable?

A traditional prussik you are climbing ' one-sided' so to speak . When using a device like the zig zag you climb hand over hand symmetrical with your body . Theoretically this should be easier on your limbs ..

The zigzag is a brilliant device, my climbing has definitely benefited from its use. Slack tending and small adjustments is great.

Same here, I'm glad that I learned on a prussic and blakes etc. Because it helped me learn about ropes and knots. I wouldn't go back to using it on a daily basis though, because I love my Zigzag too much.
