A couple of years ago my Dad had 3 , maybe 4 ambulance visits mainly due to brandy and falling . At the time I suggested ( strongly ) that maybe drinking brandy was not a good idea . In short he agreed and for the last 2 yeas he has drunk only red wine with his meal and is fine doing that . Yesterday a mate of his took him out to lunch and gave him a brandy ( or 2 ) the result is he fell and broke his leg . Now apart from all the usual feelings for my Dad and the kindness of his mate I am also ticking that they have offered him some brandy after all this time . At 91 he is going to struggle to heal and walk again and it was avoidable and unnecessary . Tricky . What do you think .

I took a certain supplement when I broke my leg and it had a dramatic effect on the speed and quality of healing, namely Healthspan Osteo Complete. Vitamin D and boron, Docs said my rate of bone healing was like nothing they'd ever seen. Seriously.

That's a tough one Stubby, in an ideal world you would cut the brandy out,but to restrict the old boy might detract from his pleasure, I would concentrate for the moment on getting him recovered and take time to work out the best way to try and keep the brandy out of harms way.

My old man got from being super fit to not walking in a very short time, and had to give up some of the things he gained motive to live for in the process,it proved his undoing not being able to enjoy his little pastimes, and he literally lost the will to live, he lasted a couple of years like that and it was on the whole rather miserable for us all here.

I would much rather he lived with a few months of pleasure than the drawn out drudgery that he suffered, but to the same avail, there are some sacrifices that are worth making, and it sounds like the brandy is not pivotal in your dad's pleasure, so if you can cut it out without too much grief its a good move done tactfully..

I hope he makes a good recovery and you get him up and out fast, keep things bright and breezy for him.:001_smile:

Sorry to hear about your Father, Stubby.

I have mother in law living with us the last 8 yrs she's 96, doing ok till 2nd week of Jan, fell and broke her top right arm. I can't imagine what we would do if she broke a leg/hip. Luckily wife retired in December but still means we have to wash, dress, help with toilet, not helped by the fact we have a downstairs bathroom.

I fitted a second bannister rail on the stairs and all the disabled bars from the Screwfix catalogue in the bathroom. Borrowed a commode for the bedroom off a nice lady on "Streetlife" a neighbourhood help scheme.

Do contact the "Adult Health Team" at your council, there is also one inside the Hospital they can advise on a care package, help for dad and for you, do be careful if the hospital prescribe Codine Pain Pills for your dad (Co-Codimol) as MIL had hallucinations, mice running round the room, I had to rescue her from the wardrobe 3 times in one night while she was "talking to a little girl". Glad to say she's off those meds and life is getting back to normal what ever than is. Currently we have regular trips to the fracture clinic, blood tests and all that stuff.

Anyway all the best to you both and if I can help with any more info do PM me S.G.
