Top handle is slightly more prone to kick back if you are careless because of the handle configuration . Having said that this proneness to kickback does not mysteriously vanish when up a tree . I think top handles are safer on the ground than up a tree as you have a grip on both handles and both feet planted on the ground . Obviously a ground saw would be safer but top handles dont become more dangerous when used on the ground . Quit the opposite I would say .

Totally agree with you there, for pruning trees when you are on the ground they are safer than in the tree. No rope to cut, no risk of slipping off a branch. Just as safe as a ground saw when used correctly

Top handles aren't more prone to kickback at all. When there is kickback, they are harder to control.

Other than that, top handles are more dangerous than rear handled, so why use one on the ground?

Er, cos you can hold the bit with the other hand when your cutting it? Seriously tho they are more accurate for pruning than a back handled saw. I really don't get what all the fuss is about using them on the ground. If you can't use a topper on the ground safely then should you be using any chain saw at all?

The film makers aren't interested in best practice, they simply want profitable film making

Agreed.

The point is it shows use of top handled saws (was the use single handed?) other than when suspended from a harness is commonplace.

It's just another bit of ammunition for a diligent HSE bod to notice and resurrect the attempt to ban the sale of top handled saws.

Ok they aren't more prone to kick back . They are not more dangerous either . Unless the user is a a complete knob .

First chainsaw I ever used was a 020t on the ground before I did a chainsaw course about 16 years ago, never hurt myself with a top handle but once touched my knee with a ground saw because moved backwards before the chain had fully stopped moving (trousers on so all good)

I don't get the problem with top handles it's all down to the user regardless of the saw
