mf 35 engine diagnosis

I run the old girl for a few hours work couple times a month.

 

Noticed she was abnormally difficult to start this time

weird i thought, (good battery, and alternator fitted last year)

 

Once running Noted the engine was laboring as i revered out of shed as i normally do in tick over and she chonked out. (as though i had the braked engaged)

 

Drove it about a bit, and was struggling in lower rev's, much smokier then before.

Also laboring when stationary and running pto splitter, also stalled a few times.

 

Give it a good run about, but no improvement.

 

Condensation build up in fuel tank?

Hi mate I will ask my MF mate who had worked on 30)40years there's a filter off the fuel tap mate try and new filters thanks Jon

3 or 4 cylinder?

Smoke, - over fuel -difficult to assess , or insufficient air - easier to check. Blocked air filter or collapsing flexible intake pipes? Open up a direct air to manifold joint and see if things improve. This will show an air intake issue, if no joy you're then starting to look deeper I'm afraid. Blocked fuel filters/ injectors dont smoke but do kill power.

I had a 4 cylinder 35 with a similar problem, bitch to start, clouds of black smoke, over fueling, turned out to be a diaphragm in the fuel pump,

simple fix. Too much fuel getting through or something.

Hi mike there's very small mesh filters inside the C A V PUMP I will ask tonight a mate thanks Jon

Do the easy service items 1st.

 

1 The 2 main fuel filters.

 

2 The bronze mesh filter in alloy head of the glass bowl water trap - carefull not to damage it - use a fine pointed knife to pull out one edge 1st.

 

3 Fuel tap tank filter.
