Petrol. How old is old

Hi.

Have a full sealed Jerry can of petrol in the garage been in there since June!

Am I still ok to use it in my equipment or has it already gone off.

Whats the time frame for storing petrol, how long can you keep it.

Also what are the symptoms of stale petrol? Hard to start, cutting out etc????

Not that I know anything about it but reckon it'll be right. If the can was tight sealed, and not in the sun and heat, nothing would have evaporated. The ethanol might have settled out, possibly. Personally I wouldn't use it in my good gear, rather chuck in the the car. If it had been mixed with high grade oil six month ago it will be better, as the top-shelf oils have fuel stabiliser in them.

Smell it . If it smells of moth balls its way past it . If not may be ok to put a 4 stroke mower but I would not mix it for a saw . Pump fuel starts to go off the second it leavs the refinery .

open the top of the can, flick a lighted match in, if nothing happens its stale and chuck it down the nearest drain.

Don't be tight. Get rid and get some fresh stuff. Cheaper than a buggered saw.

I've tried it with diesel and had to pour loads away

I remember along time ago.. Motocross guys used to use old fuel as they said it was better.

Iirc it's the oil that degrades with time, ie the petrol breaks it down.

 

Would be interesting to experiment but I never have the time.

It's £30 worth of fuel that could cost much more in repairs of your saws. Why even risk it?

Stick it in a petrol car with another 20 litres of fresh. It will cause no problem and will return the £30 value which you can spend on fresh fuel for your saws.
