Archbishop of Canterbury doubts the presence of God!

Given the barbarity of the spanish empire over the whole of europe during the 15th and 16th centuries and the almost total destruction of the dutch republic because of their refusal to accept the love of the christian god monster, I humbly suggest that it may be a little bit more complicated than that.

Would you like to share which of Christ's teachings the Spanish were following?

Funnily enough, I was in Madrid Plaza Mayor today.

The Spanish Inquisition burned loads of Christians there as heretics.

I would like to remind you that a true definition of a Christian is a disciple or a follower of Christ. Someone who follows his teachings.

The Auto Da Fe of the Spanish Inquisition had nothing to do with the teachings of Christ.

Forgive me; it had always been my impression that phillip of spain was seeking to impose his catholic faith upon the protestant dutch and was prepared to burn every dutchman who refused to not be a protestant. A fate that would have also awaited the english had it not been for a little skirmish off gravelines that put an end to his planned english invasion in 1588.

And thankyou for reminding me what a definition of a christian is you're very kind;you see in all this excitement i just clean plumb forgot.

As to which of his teachings they used to justify what they did: I have no idea whatsoever. None.Zip. Nada.

I'm not very well educated so please bear with me.

The reformed Protestant church was still very much in its infancy and of course the Catholic Church were keen on crushing (or burning) it.

I think Phillips motives were just as much political and financial as they were religious.

One of the main aims of the Protestant reformation was that people would have the freedom to read The Bible in their own language and be able to follow the teachings of Christ.

Sadly as so often happens politics and greed get in the way.

If you have never read the gospels for yourself I would highly recommend it :) You would see that Jesus himself took a dim view of people that used religion to oppress the very people they were meant to look after.

just be thankful the Spanish fought off 700 years of Muslim rule.

Trying to diminish the significance of Christianity on western civilisation by only highlighting it's lowest points tells me almost everything I need to know about you and almost nothing about Christian Europe.

I hate this!!!!!! Why do those who don't believe need a name???????:confused1:

Whats the name for those who don't believe in elves or fairies????????

Surely not believing in some great pixie in the sky is just sanity and is not in need of some label to denote your lucidity.

I was going to call myself an arborist first. But I thought that might send the thread off on a tangent ;-)

This thread is brilliant!!!!!!!

So now we are to be grateful for the christian atrocities, as without them the muslim atrocities we would have suffered would have been much worse :001_huh:

All religion is about money and power, its a way of milking the weak and poor, IMO.

Yep,that about sums it up for me.

Anyone who needs a book written about them to try and maintain control, and empower their spin doctors is a megalomainiac at best, and a fictitious symbol of control at worst.
