Oldest karabiner which you still use.

Okay, okay, I concede:biggrin:

I just dug it out and my lucky carabiner, both used for arb from 1973 but bought for rock climbing several years before. The stubai held me when I peeled off inverted vee but I cannot find the moac chog. The hiat was my attachment to the rope and harness.

When I started in arb, before moving to forestry, I would free climb to the top anchor using rock climbing methods and protection with runners and then converting to double rope technique.

I had largely given up climbing by the time screw gates were deprecated or LOLER became a consideration.

Hi all

Another Stubai also circa 1973 which I dont depend on but does get used now & again.

When purchased in Oxford along with a few other items, my mother a keen rock climber in the 50's referred to it as: 'that new fangled ironmongery'

Love it

Well, it did seem like that. Back then it was leather boots with hobb nails, hemp ropes & belaying only at the top of a pitch.

I have some old pictures somewhere

I like them Stubai karabiners because of the screw thread .

Indeed

  • 4 years later...

Just been cleaning and checking my karabiners, and my oldest one (27 years old ) which is still in use has never needed maintenance.

maybe because there’s no inner sleeve.

there’s a outer nylon barrel and then the aluminium .
I think on most karabiners there’s a sandwich of metal , plastic and metal again.

Maybe room for improvement.
