yes i get them ,and quote my small log surcharge ,which means they tend to order 10 inch logs ,which tells me they are a pita.only one customer admitted to me that he set up workbench and cut the whole load in half with a bow saw ,as he was over 80 i felt sorry for him and give him small logs at no extra charge.the others i tell to go to the garage and buy briquetts.

They moan when they are too big, others moan that my logs are too small, was told by one git they were too dry, another claimed to have found woodworm in his house "which must have come out of your logs" .

I shall be glad when i retire and then when they phone up i will simply say, 'no, dont do logs any more.'

Right on the first two points but I disagree on the third, they'll be getting less solid volume for the same bulk volume.

Do you think so, because i have always found that the smaller the logs the more wood i get on the back. I shall have to experiment. I am quite happy to be wrong, would rather know the correct answer.

Same.

Big logs = big air gaps = less timber

If your logs were sawdust size there would be no air gaps.

A trailer load of my 20" oak thrown logs weighs more than a trailer load of my 8" thrown oak logs.

Now you have thrown a spanner into the conversation! I often wonder if the 18" log customers are getting more than the smaller logs, but they do take less time to cut. Never weighed the loads we deliver.
