You're totally missing the point. No one is suggesting that. What we are saying is the new methods will make good climbers even more efficient.

I moved over to a hitch climber and VT pretty soon after starting to climb, I've owned a spider jack and zigzag and tried a lock jack, but didn't get on with them so have stuck to my hitch climber pulley!

 

Recently brought a rope wrench and trying to get my head round SRT, trouble is most times I'll just stick to DdRT as it's what I know.

 

Always have a spare prussik on my harness though, in case I wan to use the other end of my rope or for rescuing someone

Totally agree that no matter how good a climber you are on a prussik/blakes, once you're used to it you will be more efficient and less strain on your body with one of the setups mentioned on here

I know guys who are in there 40's and 50's who are very good climbers , they have no fancy stuff , just a simple blowline&prussik and wire core strop with a prussik as the adjuster and thats it , very simple and it just goes to show you don't need to spend loads of money and be all kitted up to be good and get the job done safely and productively.

 

less gear less to think about and thats what i like personally.

i have no problem with news systems and i dont have ago at anybody for what they climb on because its all personal preference at the end of the day , every bit of kit suits some1 different.

Did you say the same about new fangled pneumatic tires on your push iron, power steering on your truck & the move from hemp ropes

Why is there a breed of stubborn "real men" climbers out there, Prussic are horrible, fact. Yes you can do it, yes there cheap, yes it's less gear, and yes you should know how to do it if your stuck, but people wouldn't invent "shiny" things to make us slower or crapper. And for people who say "I can get the tree down faster than any other climber ever, in the history of climbers on this planet with my Prussic, grow up, your elbows will fall off and you won't be climbing very fast for long. "Drops the mic" I'm finished lol

This rescuing someone, is it real? Let's say someones fifty foot up a tree and cuts themselfs with a chainsaw is anyone going to get up there quick enough to be of any use?

 

I did my confined space refreser course last week and the question cropped up.... Would we be able to get someone 'out the hole' in an emergency, the answer was, doubt it!

I agree that if someone cut themselves badly 50' up, odds are slim that even the best climber would get there in time. However, if they suffered a broken bone, concussion or the like, a rescue situation isn't out of the question. So having a prussik ether to attach yourself to them, or to lower both of you out of the tree is a good idea IMO, along with a spare krab, first aid kit and knife on your harness

Unless its a seasoned quick climber then highly unlikely, even then still unlikely. I've always said if I hurt myself up a tree that bad I can't get myself down then i'm probably screwed.

I cut my arm up a tree, lacerating an artery & I can guarantee, that if I had not got myself out of the tree asap, then I would be dead - no-one could have helped me in time imho !
